Most people aren't naive enough to believe that PSN is free. I bet if you think about it, Sony figured the cost of PSN into the price of the console, or at least had a plan for recouping any money they have to spend to implement PSN. It is implied that you can play online when you purchase a PS3, isn't that something you are paying for? You may not be charged a monthly fee, that doesn't mean you didn't pay for it.

No, Sony lost more money on the PS3 than MS did on the 360 console, and continues to make less on the hardware.

PS3: $299 + $0, blu-ray.

Sony doesn't treat PSN online gaming as a profit center like MS does, they make whatever money from PSN off of game sales, DLC and movies. (And the few people who pay for PSN Plus for whatever odd reason.)

Actually, they do use it as a profit center just in a different way. I remember reading a report last year that PSN was starting to be profitable because of all the online transactions that occur through it.

That's what I meant by game downloads, DLC and movies -- they make money off of selling things, not off of the online service itself.

At $40-60 a year, MS is almost certainly making a nice bit of profit off of Live Gold subscriptions, even before they sell you anything else through it.

True, luckily Netflix, blu-rays and (most) single-player is still working properly, but it's pretty sad to have an outage last this long -- the worst for Live has been what, 2 days?

It sucks it is down, but I can't bring myself to complain really since the service is free. If I was paying for it, I'd be really pissed though. I rather they fix correctly instead of trying to get it up and running asap and then have more problems, multiple outages close together usually piss people off more then a single long one.

Uhm, WHAT? You must be OK with them also removing the "Other OS" feature, too. Sony owes it's CUSTOMERS who purchased their product with the intent of playing multiplayer games, the ability to do so. The fact that PSN is pseudo-free (there's still the pay option) was a huge selling point for most people buying a PS3. It's not like the product is at end-of-life ...

Eh, paying PSN members should be reimbursed. Those who only utilize the free portion completely are allowed to bitch, but I wouldn't expect any type of reimbursement.

there is no such thing as "paying PSN members" ... PS+ is not paying for PSN, it is paying for extra features that are accessed through PSN.

PSN is 100% free.

that said, those paying for PS+ should get some sort of reimbursement.

This. Can't believe all the whining I'm seeing over this. It's a free service, Sony owes NOTHING to customers (except maybe PS+ users). This is an entertainment service, it does little else. From the sounds of it, people have nothing else in their lives to occupy their time. Sound like junkies.
