This. Can't believe all the whining I'm seeing over this. It's a free service, Sony owes NOTHING to customers (except maybe PS+ users). This is an entertainment service, it does little else. From the sounds of it, people have nothing else in their lives to occupy their time. Sound like junkies.

So in that case, yes, Sony owes it to it's customers to keep the service alive. And I really don't care, I sold my PS3 a year ago - I just think it's funny how people will bash XBL for being down for a day, but PSN goes down for multiple days and those people who bash XBL claim that no one should care or be upset that PSN is down.
Again, Sony owes you nothing. Do you try to get $$ from the power company when a storm knocks out power? Does anyone have that expectation? Not like there is nothing else in this world to spend time on.
Relating a power outage to PSN being down? Completely different service, sir. Let me guess, next you'll try to relate murder, or perhaps a DUI to PSN being down!

verify that it's down for maintenance
sign in again
after a few times netflix comes up and works ok
The only ones that I can think of that deserve any kind of recompense during this outage is subscribers to DC Universe Online, Hulu Plus, MLB.tv or Netflix (if you can get it working).
No, Sony lost more money on the PS3 than MS did on the 360 console, and continues to make less on the hardware.
Xbox: $299 + $40/year, cheaper hardware (e.g. no blu-ray drive)
PS3: $299 + $0, blu-ray.
Sony doesn't treat PSN online gaming as a profit center like MS does, they make whatever money from PSN off of game sales, DLC and movies. (And the few people who pay for PSN Plus for whatever odd reason.)
but even Hulu Plus, its not like you're paying Sony for that. I can't access my Hulu Plus on PSN right now...so last night, I hooked up my laptop to the TV. Or I could watch it on my Sony Blu Ray player in another room. You pay Hulu for that service, which happens to work on the PS3.
...and even if they did compensate you, 1 week of your $8/month subscription is what....$2? Is it really worth it?
Per Ars technica Sony is not bringing up PSN because they are not sure your credit card info is safe.

Btw, the inFamous 2 beta will be extended due to the PSN issues. Sucker Punch won't say how long though until PSN is brought back up.

I'm so annoyed about this whole thing only because I was gonna play portal on the PC and so got the PS3 version so I could basically have a version on each. Can't even activate the code though
Yeah, I goofed up and forgot to sign up for it along with the Resistance 3 beta and the Xbox LIVE Spring preview program.
Ok, I've seen a bunch of speculation of why people think PSN is down, and I thought I should just post what the community knows in comparison to what Sony is telling everyone. The truth is, there was a new CFW (custom firmware) released known as Rebug (http://rebug.me). It essentially turns a retail console into a dev console (not fully, but gives you a lot of the same options that usually dev's only have access to). Anyway, this new CFW was quickly figured out to give CFW users access to the PSN network again via the dev networks. With a little manipulation of the URL's through a proxy server you could get your hacked console back online. Not that big of a deal, right? Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony's private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network. Now, before you go freaking out about the latest information posted about Kotaku, no ones personal information was accessible via this hack. Not to say they couldn't get it, but no one is admitting to it being available. Anyway, that's the real reason for the PSN downtime. Sony is now rebuilding all of it's PSN servers to be more secure and (hopefully) make sure the CFW users cannot get online anymore.
