Think I'm just going to call my credit card company and have them issue me a new card regardless. After this and the monoprice incident Amex must be thinking I've rented out a billboard and pasted my credit card number and expiration date on it.

Yeah, that's what I'm going to do as well. Better to be safe than sorry.

Lucky for me my CC expired two weeks ago and I never updated it in PSN. I knew there was a reason that I have prepaid cards on almost all other services.

:hmm: I can't remember if I ever bought a PSN game with my credit card. I think I might have once.

Icing on the s--t sundae I guess. I think my credit card in there actually expired. Haven't bought anything for awhile. So at least I'm good...sort of, kind of....

Damn, I just I had my debit card number stolen in Feb. and now this. I'm also not crazy about my name, addy, email addy, birthdate, etc. in someone hands.

What if I provided a CC number for Netflix? Did it go directly to Netflix or "through" the PSN to Netflix?

Their advice is to be safe, rather than sorry. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

Do you have to provide CC info when you create an account? I haven't bought anything through the playstation store, just downloaded some demos.

Nope. Only if you make a purchase through the PSN Store.

I'm not too worried since I froze my credit with all three bureau couple of years ago but this does suck. I remember someone here warning to remove credit card info from PSN when PS3 was hacked and first CFW 3.55 was released. I didn't think much of it but that person was spot on.

For future reference, does PSN have something similar to MS points that you can buy on a prepaid card? That's how I've avoided giving my CC to MS so far.

not canceling my card..going to take my chances. just hope they didnt steal my trophies

Same. I think people are being a little too fearmonger-y about this. Nothing wrong with being safer than sorry, though.

One card I probably have used in the past was recently replaced due to expiration date. My main card will be replaced very, very soon, so I'll take my chances. I only have one other card but I have no idea if I've even used it on PSN. I guess I can't see if it was saved until they bring the service back up, right? I haven't been following this too much so I'm assuming there's no logging in, period.

Jesus Christ, how does a company this massive get dealt such a blow? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to network security of this scale so if someone can enlighten me I'd greatly appreciate it. Is this a case where nothing is impenetrable or should we just assume they weren't as tightly locked down as they should have been?

That is the question; did Sony actually fuck up so bad that they were compromised this badly, or is Sony using "hackers" as an excuse for a reason to have PSN down for some undisclosed reason?

I find it difficult to believe that all this is because someone hacked Sony's PSN servers.

Probably. I mean, didn't they get the "master key" for the PS3 firmware, because Sony F'ed up the implementation of their encryption scheme?

Yup. If I had any lingering doubts about Sony's total incompetence in the security realm since the PS3 key fiasco, they are now dispelled. Also, there's no way they'd take a giant PR hit like this if they hadn't actually been hacked.
