Yes - I just turned my PS3 on right now and I can't sign into PSN and I also cannot start any games...wtf? Even if I disable my network connection I cannot start any games. Also all my Resident Evil 5 trophies have disappeared from my trophy list. I also cannot go to any Sony-owned Playstation related websites via my PC. I think Sony is having a major outage right now.

The most unnerving thing that something seemingly network related is causing me to be unable to play a game even in offline mode.

from what i gather this seems to be some bug with the ps3. Majority of them the fat ones.

even those not connected to the internet is getting a screwed up date of 12/31/99.

I see no point in turning my ps3 on to join the crowd. maybe sony will give all of us with fat ps3s, ps3 slims as replacements. then claim their ps3 sales numbers jumped.

Yup. Can't play Assassin's Creed II even though it's an entirely offline game. Also, all my trophies for the game are missing. Huzzah!

Yup. I'm having the same issue. I just shut it off for now. If it's still doing the same thing tomorrow, I'm going to be pissed!

That's BS. Can you disable the network connection or unplug your ethernet cable to the PS3 and try to play the game?

From what I've been gathering, fat PS3's are suffering from a variant of the Y2k scare. The internal software is attempting to move the clock from 2/28 to 3/1 but for some reason the internal clock thinks that it is a leap year causing the system to go haywire and resets the clock to some other time.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=388872

The going theory is that the PS3 is storing some form of date in GMT, then modifying that to get whatever you see in the on-screen clock. That modification process seems to be fine--the system can take 2/28/2010, 9PM GMT, add four hours, and get 3/1/2010, 1AM random time zone.

What's apparently effed, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It's either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can't do because the front-end calendar doesn't have a 2/29/2010, and shit explodes. Seemed to happen around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT, so.

And the PS3 launched in 2006; it's hit 4 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system's been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I'm less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point.)

Wow, major fail if this is true.

Didn't the Zune had a similar calendar bug a few years ago where everyone had to wait a day because it was glitched?

I'll keep my fatty off, hopefully it'll be fixed by Tuesday.

The Zune thing was last year, and my Zune was victim to it.
I'm keeping my shit off until this is fixed. If it isn't fixed by Tuesday though, I'll be hella pissed, as BF:BC2 comes that day!

The thread that's developed on the NeoGAF forums about the issue is absolutely hilarious, with the phenomenon now being referred to as the ApocalyPS3, and users submitting various taglines (my favorite being "Clock Blocked"). Skip ahead to the 30th or so page for the jokes to start flowing.

Pretty phenomenal fuck up on Sony's part though. As one user so accurately put it, "only Sony could have a Y2K issue 10 years late."

'Cept MS did it with the Zune, creating an even larger fuck up than this I'm sure...

So, PSN isn't down. It's only unavailable to the faulty PS3s.

'Cept MS did it with the Zune, creating an even larger fuck up than this I'm sure...

That's not really fair. Especially since we don't know what the exact Sony issue is at this point.

The Zune issue was a bug with a driver for one of the processors. It affected all devices, regardless of manufacturer, using that processor and driver, not just the MS Zune. The fix was simply to allow the device to drain.

Sadly, most likely, your PS3 would still be affected because there is a battery in the system. From what I read, it seems the problem might be solved by resetting the battery, like clearing the CMOS.

I hope they have a solution without me sending my system in or replacing it. I am quite fine with my system except due to this stupid bug.

I'm noticing that someone on the GAF theorized that consoles pre-CECHL are affected... my PS3 60gb is CECHA, so, um, yeah, leaving it off... no sense risking save game corruption or whatever other weirdness that might come from not handling the date correctly.

Setting the clock forward or backward apparently doesn't help fix this one, because the system's internal (and read-only!) clock is what's screwed up here... if just waiting for the next day doesn't fix it and the clock stays stuck on an imaginary 2/29, Sony is possibly in for a huge number of hardware repairs. I doubt that's the case, but it's at least as big as the Zune thing that happened a couple years ago.

wow..

I love funny errors and bugs. Not to turn this into a PS3 vs XBOX thread because honestly these types of errors can happen to anyone, but I would be pissed if I couldn't have played yesterday due to this bug.
