Hmmmmm this seems like it would be a hobbyists wet dream. Is it moddable? I bet you could rip its guts out, mount it to your case front, power it up via your PC power supply, attach it to a tv card and watch TV on your case .

or something like that anyway . . .

This is a hot deal for what it is.

But when is someone going to make a cheap freestanding LCD screen like this
with a VGA connector? I can't be the only person who wants to hook
a small computer into their A/V system but can't find a comparably
aesthetically not-unpleasing very small monitor to go with it.

Can I?

I think ur best bet is prolly getting this, making a mini case or whatever, then getting a tvout card or a usb tv out kinda thing if they make em...Lcds that interface to the computer usualy have a controler card, which in the case of a 5inch lcd is prolly bigger then the lcd itself.

This is tempting from a project standpoint. Added bonus, they take Paypal if you have funds you want to spend (like me).

I am planning on trying to use these screens with rear view or backup cameras for my car.
Any suggestions for cheap cameras for this?
I have seen some really cheap PC board mounted cameras but do not remember where.
Thanks, John

Good thing I ordered yesterday. I snoozed on the Gamevue one so hopefully this one is better. Only 17 left. Mine shipped today. only $8.50 for shipping. Can't beat that (Especially to Hawaii)!.

I bought a set of x10 cams long time ago, and I cut and soldered the wires on one of the cams, so that it can plug into a vcr or tv. I think i will buy this lcd screen, then combine with the modded cam, I can use them instead of the rear view mirror....

maybe not, that's kinda dangerous isnt it?left and right wont be the same as in the mirror

can usb cam be modded to plug into a vcr? anyone tried that?

Damn.. This looks like fun.. I might use it as a portable TV to run from my computer to my bed so I can watch DIVX movies and such.. Thinking about it hard.. I am also assuming it would work great with other consoles.

Does anyone still have a link to sites or forums that have modification info.
Maybe HardOCP forum. I have searched but can find nothing?
Thanks, John

So can anyone who bought one report on the picture quality of this screen? The price makes me very tempted to buy one.

You know the weird thing is that the first link is a referer link. Funny that no one's noticed it, when usually it's in the first couple posts.

I don't imagine referral ids are hurting Anand or (FW) in this particular case -easy to strip if you are inclined
funnier when they leave their own cart and personal info inside...

Got mine yesterday, with only 1st chance to use it tonight. It has several problems. I don't have a PSone, so I picked up a multi-voltage adaptor at radio shack (300ma output) First problem - flaky power jack. I have to hold it for it to keep power. Tried it with s-video from directivo, dvd, and composite from directivo. Lousy picture. I think the s-video pic is actually worse than the composite pic. The graphics from the tivo are fuzzy at best. Screen response time is slow - I would think playing games on this could be frustrating.

Best results were from satellite via composite. I didn't try dvd by composite or the audio.

I guess I had high hopes for this thing. I think it would be fine as a monitor for a security camera, which is it's most likely desination after I take it apart.

that is a pretty cool idea. the turbine motorcycle, powered by decommissioned airplane jet engines, has a rear-mounted camera and TV screen setup too. jay leno's got one--it was only $300K. here is info on that:

http://popularmechanics.com/automotive/sub_coll_leno/2001/8/recycled_jet_setter/index2.phtml

Except you don't have a conventional rearview mirror. You have a video camera that's mounted in the tail section, facing backward, of course. It transfers the rear image to a monitor in the dash.
