Hi, I spend my summers treeplanting to make cash. Obviously I need something to keep me entertained while I have off time that isnt going to eat up all the cash I make. So I started looking into ways to port out old games that I could play a reasonable amount of time.

So what I'm wondering is if there is anything you guys could suggest that would be good for playing older/smaller games that would also be reasonable to use with batteries/battery hookups. Ive tried things like gameboys but I have never been a big fan of most of those games, not to mention the ridiculous cost associated with each new game. I would love it if I could get something I could just play my old games on. My target of choice would be if some form of mini laptop existed that didnt eat up so much power yet still had basic computer functions on it to play games and such.

Also, I'm not sure what this borders on, but I'm a fan of the old super nintendo Roms. I'm not even sure what the legal areas are for it, but what I do know is that there is no other way to play these short of carrying around a super nintendo and a tv with you. If there was any sort of hookup reasonably available that made these possible to play on handhelds I would be very happy.

Anyway, if anyone can give any sort of suggestions or opinions on what may work it would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps something such as these:

# 1
or
# 2
I don't know much about things like spftware emulation, but maybe you could get some sort of emulator for Windows to run on one of those^?

If you have a laptop you can download an emulator for the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), although you need to have a copy of the game or else it would be illegal if you keep it for mre than 24 hours.
Most SNES games have been ported to the GBA (Game Boy Advance), it was either SNES or NES (Nintendo Entertainment System).
A PSP should be way out of your price range.
I don't know of any mini laptops, but the best bet I can give you is something with Centrino.
Good luck!

Just FYI, the "24 hour trial" thing has no legal basis whatsoever. Downloading ROM images of games you don't own is a violation of copyright law (and distributing ROM images of any games is illegal as well, making downloading them at all somewhat of a grey area in copyright law). Nintendo says you can't make copies of game ROMs, but fair use laws would logically indicate you can, and generally the legality of emulators has been upheld (as long as they were not developed by using proprietary information). The whole thing is one of those situations where intellectual property laws start to break down badly.

There have been a number of NES games ported to the GBA, along with newer versions of a few SNES games (such as F-Zero); those are not usually direct ports, however (I don't think the GBA has the horsepower to run a complete SNES emulator). If you're willing to spend $150, you can do a lot worse than a GBA for portable gaming.

Gameboys are about the best you can do price-wise. A portable SNES would be absolutely fantastic... but nothing like that is available.

Maybe down the road the PSP could emulate S/NES, which would make it a killer deal for <$250

Isn't the DS supposed to have N64 graphics or something? Because if it does then I am pretty sure SNES games will be on it.

I have a handheld machine called GP32 ( fan site here ) the whole thing is open source, so run whatever you want including an OS. I use it almost exclusively to play my old NES/SNES roms on an emulator.

if some kind of emulator does come out for PSP I see it as very feasable. But that will be a while from now, especially considering that there are sites currently trying to crack the PSP to get Linux up and running on it. And I would DEFINITELY see the PSP as powerful enough to power SNES emulation

I used to run Snes games on a 300 mhz celeron laptop, they ran fine. The only thing that might be of some concern is the amount of ram on those, not being enough to run some snes games.
