PSP vs. DS

Would be used mostly at home, but would take with me when traveling (rare). I like action/adventure games, racing games, platformers, RPGs, etc. Emulator support would be nice, but isn't necessary.

I suggest the DS because it's less expensive and it has great games like Yoshi's Island 2 and New Super Mario Bros. If you like classic Nintendo games, go with the DS.

PSP is your hacking dream paradise and games have been getting really good. DS has loads of title but i still like PSP as its getting more serious epic type games. DS on the other hand has craploads causal games with awesome rpgs. DS has alot of good rpg and platformers. Reason why i like my PSP better than DS is because DS screen is so small that it stuff up my eyes vision after 20mins of gamplay which psp doesn't do that. Thing is that sony pretty much screwed for 1st 2 years of PSP launch and now they started to get some true PSP title.

I like the PSP more because of the screen and multimedia capabilities. The DS has some innovative games, but I got a headache trying to play MP: Hunters. It didn't have enough power for the graphics. I have both systems and basically gave up on both because there haven't been any recent games worth playing for me recently.

Get a PSP, get custom firmware. You will then be able to play almost all PS1 games on your PSP (almost flawlessly, too), you will be able to use/play homebrew software and games, you will be able to play emulators, and you'll be able to play PSP games.

I have both a DS and PSP...and the PSP is the only thing I take with me.

I have a PSP and a DS. I havent touched my PSP in over a year. I play my DS nearly everyday. Yeah, PSP graphics are better, but the games are no fun IMO, I love my DS and FF rocks, as does countless other DS games. Nintendo has proved, yet again, its not how powerful the system is, it's how good the games are. They did it with the DS and now with the Wii. They are a pure game company.

Keep in mind if you are left handed, some DS games are going to be very tough to play.

DS definitly. but damn, you're lefty..hmm.

the stylus thing does get annoying sometimes, but most games make really good use of it, and i love my ds lite. online tetris is addictive, new super mario bros is a great game, and mario kart is always good (online is good too). all three use very little of the touch screen, and eats up a lot of your time.

I'm right handed, so no big deal about using the stylus.

Are there NES/SNES/Genesis emulators for the DS?

One thing I hated about the DS is that it does not support WPA. Is it still the case?

If youre using it mostly at home, just get a home console. PSP has basically home console games shrunk down to the small screen, but why would you want to play them on a small screen when you've got a big one in front of you?

DS has some quirky, interesting games, which arent really home console games shrunk down (the good ones at least) I'd say buy the DS over the PSP just because its going to offer you something you dont already have...unless you have a home console. Then clearly, just get one of those.

i haven't held a PSP, but if you have big hands, stay away from the DS. I was going to get a DS but the buttons are so close together.

I do have big hands, but the games for the DS sound better. It's a tough choice.

If you like more console style games and could use the functionality (MP3 player, Media Player, Hacked for ROM support, web browser) then get the PSP. If you love Nintendo games and casual games, get the DS.

I had a DS, loved it to death, but I beat New Mario Bros, Mario Kart, and a couple games and after that it quickly gathered dust.

I say wait for the redesigned PSP, and buy it. The PSP is a great multimedia machine, the DS is more about the games.

PSP all the way, I'd say anyone who'd recommend the DS over it hasn't tapped into the full capabilities of their PSP. If you've got custom firmware you get emulator support from the beginning of time all the way up to the SNES in the 16-bit era, GBA, and damn near the full PS1 library is playable as well. MAME, Neo Geo, CPS1 and CPS2, it's obviously not powerful enough to emulate DC games but it can easily handle ports such as the Powerstone Collection.

The widescreen LCD kills the DS when it comes to multimedia, DVDs can be ripped and played back in full speed. The browser is free, built in, and much better than the one offered for the DS. You can store photos, text files, and MP3s (although there are more capable devices designed for this, but the option is there). The XMB is nice too, and there's a lot of customization options available like changing the top menu, icons, sound and etc. I'm not really into that, but some people are.

Memory sticks up to 8gb are available, I have a 4gb stick and I've got more games and videos on it than I can play in one sitting. And when you're travelling that's a lot of crap that you don't have to carry around with you. At retail the PSP is about $40 more than a DS Lite, but in the used market you can actually find PSPs cheaper than the DS Lite since they're lower in demand, and honestly there's so much more you can do with it.

Now if you look at it on a strictly UMD vs DS cartridge basis, the DS would probably win out due to more commercial games worth playing available, more games with Wi-Fi (infrastructure) support, and much longer battery life. But if you've got custom firmware, and there's a 3.50 downgrader now so it's wide open, IMO it's no contest. I've only got a handful of UMDs I play on the PSP, but I spend a ton of time playing games like Super Mario World and RPG, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 7, Tomba, Legend of Mana, Harvest Moon, <insert your fav OG game here>. But the DS is a lot more ergonomic, that's another negative to the PSP. It's kind of like holding a CD case with buttons, and the analog stick is a piece of crap. I've still put ~7 hour long sessions into it on occassion though, so it's bearable.

The PSP is like a mini laptop, and the DS is a gameboy on steroids. I can't even recommend the DS to anyone that really wants to play the handful of exclusives, because it's not like there's a lot of replay value in any of em, so once you've beaten em all then what? And how many people really buy more than 5-6 games for their handhelds anyway?

ill say it, one game, advanced wars, im sorry, but that game made me honestly buy a ds, all of the advanced wars have kicked ass. i have both the psp and the ds, for gameplay, i like my ds more, its more fun for playing games. for multimedia, psp, well the only thing i've done on it is watch movies other than that, its kinda useless since the battery is pretty weak.
