PSP vs. DS

I have both but use the PSP more as the games are generally better from a technical perspective and the hacking/emulation end of it rocks to no end.

Personally I like my PSP more than my DS. Also, if you want all the functionality of hacking a DS to play media or roms, you need to pay more for a SD card and a special adapter (I forget what they're called). This will easily put you at or above the price of a PSP + memory stick.

I have a Creative Zen Vision W, so the PSP's multimedia functions are useless to me. I considered buying a PSP instead of the Zen, but I decided that for 12 hour plan rides the PSP just wouldn't cut it. 30 GB hard drive > flash memory.

In terms of running "homebrew" (I hate that term... it's just so stupid), the startup costs are comparable. For the PSP, all you need is a MemoryStick. For the DS you need a Slot 1 and/or Slot 2 device + flash memory (SD/CF/MiniSD/MicroSD - there are various options). That added cost nullifies the $40 price difference between the two.

In terms of what you can DO with homebrew, the PSP beats the DS. PSP can play SNES games and Playstation games. There are one or two SNES DS emulators in development, but I think they're stalled/abandoned and have limited game support.

I own a DS now, and I love it... play it all the time while I'm working out. Advance Wars series is phenomenal, as are some other games on the DS or the GBA (don't forget the enormous GBA library is also available to you). But I just bought a used PSP (waiting for it to arrive) with 1.50 firmware so I can install the latest hacked firmware and play Playstation games. I never have played the Playstation Final Fantasy games - I bought them a while back, but haven't gotten to them. If I can play them on a handheld, I'd actually devote the time to them.

Can't wait for my PSP to come.
Still love the DS though.

OK? I never said the PSP can't play those games. I was just correcting blamb425 because he seems to think you can't play FF1 on the DS, and you can.

I've been enjoying the more unique games the DS has to offer. Haven't tried the PSP out but the games dont interest me as much. The brain games on the ds and more recently Hotel Dusk.

PSP all the way. With custom firmware (using 3.50 from Dark Alex) you can play all playstation one games, even compressed. This includes all the Final Fantasy games ever released for the PSone.

I've been playing Legend of Dragoon on it since I never ended up finishing it on my PSone. So the argument that the DS has better rpgs is flawed I think. Btw, it's your PSP and SONY can't tell you what to do with it, so using the custom firmware is perfectly legal.

From my research this weekend, it seems you cannot play games that don't allow you to save at the end of each disc before moving on to the next disc. Is that still the case? I understand that this does not affect the Final Fantasy games, but it does affect Chrono Cross and some other multi-disc games. To be clear - you can PLAY the games, but you can't go beyond the first disc, because you can't switch disc images in the middle of a game. Unless they added that capability to 3.50?

Sorry, that typo is meant to say 3.40 OE-A. And while I never got to the 2nd disc of Chrono Cross, I've seen a lot of people confirming that they can indeed play it until the end. You need to make sure to assign proper game IDs to each cd.

I just confirmed via google that you can play the 2nd CD of Chrono Cross by simply using the last save point on CD1 and thus play all the way through. The key is simply coding the proper game Id into each eboot that you create from the CDs.

You cannot make a Pandora's Battery with a PSP slim, you need a PSP phat owner to make one for your PSP slim.

tough decision, personally I have both, DS with r4 and a psp with custom firmware. for killing time I probably use my psp more, lumines and puzzle fighter, I can play those games for hours and hours. also like others have been saying, you can play some of your favorite(and all time awesome oldschool) ps1 games on it. the DS is ultimate fun with friends and all the multiplayer mini games and all that, but I dont find myself playing the single player games much.
