Yeah, they're worth owning.

There are loads of awesome games and we'll be getting FFVII:Crisis Core soon (March 25th in NA). And then there's the masses of homebrew apps (iR Shell, PSPComic, PSPRadio, Snes9xTYL, etc.), and POPS (the PSX emulator).

And of course it's great for listening to music, watching videos.

My favourite game at the moment is WipEout Pulse. Intense racing game with a great soundtrack (IMO), excellent graphics, online play.

I don't think the launch PSPs had any major issues besides the dead pixel thing. I've had mine since launch and not had any problems at all with buttons, etc. (and I've used it a LOT).

As for classic versus slim, besides the size & weight difference, it basically comes down to: classic has an IR port (slim doesn't), slim has 2x the RAM (allowing it to run Skype) & TV-out.

I keep reading about people downloading demos and stuff through their PCs.

How do you go about doing that? Do you just plug your PSP to your PC via USB cable? How do you enable it to see your PSP?

Hook the PSP up to your PC with a USB cable -> enable USB in the XMB -> select a demo from the PSN store and the PSN downloader will automatically copy it to your PSP.

What's XMB?

Sorry for all the dumb questions. I just got my PSP recently and haven't explored it's functions much.

Do I need to install/download anything to my PC as well?

The XMB is the PSP's interface.

Yes, you'll need to install the PSN downloader. It should prompt you to do so when you try to download a demo for the first time.

Ah ok, cool, I'll give it a shot when I get home in the morning.

Thanks xcript.

I've always been quite partial to Lumines myself .

I noticed you also listed some homebrew apps... are those the ones you'd recommend? I looked through a huge list awhile back and there's just so many and I didn't have a good idea of well... what's good!

I tried some DDR for the PSP game... I don't think they realized how hard it is to hit L+R at the same time .

Yeah, the ones I mentioned are some of my favs.

iR Shell is a file browser & application launcher. It remains in kernel memory when you launch an app/game/etc, so you can play MP3s while using the launched app. or switch back to it temporarily to look at pics or whatever.

It can also output the display to your PC via USB+USBHostFS+RemoteJoy (nice for me as I don't have a Slim with TV-out). Works in homebrew, games, PSX, etc. Also allows you to use your PC gamepad/joystick to control games.

You can use it as a remote (many devices are supported if you get the RDF pack), you can associate a file extension with a certain app and open files with said app directly from the file browser, you can copy files and/or load apps/games/music from your PC wirelessly via NetHostFS, and loads of other stuff. Awesome piece of homebrew.

PSPComic is a nice CBR/CBZ viewer (can load huge images). Supports rotate, zoom, quite a few image formats, etc.

PSPRadio is an awesome MP3 player & shoutcast client. Really professional looking interface, IMO.

Snes9xTYL is a Super NES emulator. Games run really well after a bit of tweaking. Another nice emulator is gpSP (a full speed GBA emulator).

I use quite a few others, though. Like you say, there are so many.

I think you can use [], X, etc. to control it too, can't you? L = [], D = X, etc. For the ones I've seen, anyway.

When I first got my PSP, there weren't many games on it (I just had burnout: legends and twisted metal) and I used it mostly to watch videos during lunch converted from .avi using pspvideo9. Over the past year or two, a lot of good games have been released and my PSP is getting a lot of playtime. At this point I'd say it's definitely worth it, if you're interested in the custom firmware scene give me a PM and I can give you some resources

question about the slim: it doubled its ram to 64 megs, correct?

uhhh does this mean that any game that uses over 32 megs won't run on the O.G. "fat" psps? OR devs will start making a "32 meg version" and "64 meg version" that looks nicer, or simply those with 64 megs will experience faster loading as it is simply there to provide an extra buffer?

PSN PC Store

Thanks.

How do you extract or execute the files that you d/l? I got a few demos/videos, but they are all .xpd....what opens that?

edit: nvm, found the downloader program.

I think you can only do this via PS3.

I have one, I would say not really UNLESS you really love the following games

Final Fantasy Tactics
Ace Combat
Metal Gear
Ratchet and Clank
Patapon

thats about it for 9+ ratings on the system, overall the collection is very mediocre. I played Final Fantasy Tactics through twice because it is excellent otherwise there is only a few more games worth getting. Now if you want to homebrew that is up to you.

I love RPG games and I found the psp really kinda stinks for RPG's. The only good ones are Final Fantasy Tactics, Brave Story and Disgaea/Jeanne if they are your style. Otherwise they have a very very 5-6 score range collection.

One note: Disgaea is coming out the DS.

Also, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Ninja Gaiden got good reviews. The DS is regaining the lead in the game library imo.

imo nintendo almost always has the lead, the problem is the ds is what it is, I dont want to use a friggin stylus, so no matter what games it has it loses in my library.

I have a DS already, and recently ordered a PSP (should arrive Wednesday). The RPGs on the DS don't really go into very much depth as far as character development and tactics. The gameplay is a little too simplified. I ordered Jeanne D'Arc and FF Tactics to go with it.

Seems to be gimped though. Squished graphics on the bottom screen, useless and ugly map on the top. Voice acting is unlikely as well.

Crush is a great game to add to the must own list. The game is a brilliant 3d puzzle game that involves 'crushing' the world to 2d views based on the current view axis your on, and has some really challenging and fun puzzles.
I don't like long and complicated RPGs for my portable, as I just don't get around to playing it enough to get engrossed in the game. Patapon got me to break out my PSP for the first time in months, Crush having been the game to do the same thing prior to that. I have Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and just can't get into it. I mean, I love MGS, and it's definitely a stellar game, but it's challenging to adapt to the control scheme compared to using a full controller, and it's a game that requires a lot of time to dedicate to it to get through levels.
