The problem with the actual smell is that it gets sour fast. I'm not a smoker, but my parents used to be. The smell of tobacco burning isn't that bad. The problem is after it has burnt, settled, and then left to ripen and sour a bit. When people smoke, that smell gets attached to everything: clothes, hair, skin, nails, and anything around them. Then that smell starts to sour fast. It ends up reeking really bad.
There are things people can do to prevent it from smelling too bad. Always smoke in a well ventilated area so the smoke doesn't have as much time to linger and attach to yourself. Always brush your teeth, use some mouthwash, or even use a few mints at least after every smoke. Just those two things along cut down drastically on how bad a smoker smells.
But most smokers don't care how bad they smell. Most are so desensitized to the smell, they fail to realized how bad it really can be and usually is.
Washing your hands after smoking also reduces the smell.
