Hi. I've got an old i7 2600k build still running great since 2010. It has a Corsair HX 1050 PSU which I have had zero problems. I am finally looking to do a new build. Even though the PSU is 9 years old...would you carry it into a new build with a R9 3900x or 3950x?

My old PC is i7 2600k, 16 GB RAM, GTX 780, no OC on the CPU.

I wouldn't personally do it.

However, if it is still in good working order, it should be fine.

Also, when you do replace it, you don't need anywhere near a 1000w PSU. When you have a PSU that large, the very small desktop load placed on it is pretty inefficient.

Appreciate the comments. Before the 780 I had dual 470s or 570s and they just consumed alot of power and sounded like airplanes.

It SHOULD be just fine, IMO. Will the smaller load be a bit inefficient? Perhaps, unless you're having other PSU related problems, probably not enough so to justify the cost of replacement.
I have a 12 year old HX620 that I was going to reuse in a build...until I brokr down and bought a prw-built PC.

Should be fine, at most you're looking at ageing caps and it will likely have lost some of it's effiecency, that said, there are enough modern standards in that PSU that should it just to decide to upticks and die one day it won't take the rest of your build out with it, the earlier Corsair premium units were built by superflower or seasonic (iirc) and were some of the most highly regarded units available at that time

It depends what case / drives / lights / cpu / motherboard. The 1000w psu is 90% efficient at around 200w, I am not sure what the 3900x idle's @ but imagine it is very high and will not be a 100w total system usage type of scenario. Use it.

Your estimates are too high.

The Ryzen 3700X (whole system) idles around 53w, and most users doing typical desktop tasks will not exceed 100w (my whole PC with the 1080ti is around 70w at desktop).

And that PSU does hit 90% efficiency at just a little over 200w, but the user would have to be doing a task that would place a load that high. They will likely be in the 72% - 80% effeciency range at their desktop.

The efficiency isn't the end of the world, but newer PSUs typically have better efficiency at very low loads.

If the x570 uses 30watt more than a x470 how can the total usage be so low? Yes at idle only 4watt more but during usage over 30watts more. typical desktop usage to be typing in word or surfing the web? streaming?

I am impressed with your systems idle usage. My case has pump's fans 100tb in storage, 4 sticks of ram, nvme drives, ssd drives, lights, bluray burner, maybe 8 different usb items plugged in, dual monitor (does that increase wattage, guess I can get out my kilowatt meter). I think 10 flash drives would equal your whole system's usage?

also why do you mention 3700x, they said 3900x or 3950x

Almost all components are designed to very efficient at typical desktop usage. Of course there's some exceptions of course, but for the most part everything is able to be pretty effecient.

I doubt 10 USB drives would use anywhere near that much power. As said above, modern components are pretty effecient at the desktop.

Sorry, here's the 3900X (the 3950X is not out yet, so no idea). One of biggest praises of the 3900X is how power efficient it is compared to Intel's HEDT and the Threadripper line:

My pc's go to sleep instead of idle, however I am very impressed with the usage of 55w, still if even 50% efficient and usage is 55watt then you only are wasting 27.5 watt's at idle. Most likely they will have multiple drives / devices plugged in and actually use the computer instead of leaving it idle.
