PSU Failure - Damage to Other Components

I recently had my Corsair HX620W PSU die. The PC instantly shut off and I could smell a faint electrical odor/smoke. Corsair RMA'ed the PSU quickly and the new one works perfectly (I tested it with a DMM). However, the system is a little 'off'.

There are now random delays when I initiate programs, and the system seems to randomly hang for several seconds. As soon as I got the PSU and hooked it up, I ran Memtest 86, IntelBurnTest, and 8 hours each of Prime 95 Blend, Small FFT, and Large FFT. Everything passed without issues. I even disconnected and reconnected everything and am still having these issues. It sounds like a M/B issue, but I wouldn't think it would pass all of the tests if there was something wrong with it???

Below are my system specs:

Core i7 920 DO @ 3GHz/1.2V
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme with Scythe S-Flex SFF21E Fan
ASUS P6T WS Professional
6GB Corsair TR3X6G1600C7G @ DDR1500/1.60V
Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X with Zalman VF2000-LED
Intel NIC
WD VelociRaptor 300GB
WD Caviar Black 640GB
Samsung DVD-RW
Corsair HX650W PSU
Antec P180B with Scythe S-Flex SFF21E Fans

Can anyone offer any advice on this situation?

Thanks!

hmm i was actually thinking hard-drive issues based off your description not m/b.

do you have a spare partition you can do a fresh install of Windows to and see if the responsiveness changes?

i just went through a PSU failure myself. I had a OCZ 600w gamexstream for 2.5 years that died about 2 weeks ago. i kept reading the RMA process taking a long time so i decided to buy a new PSU. I was actually considering a Corsair 650TX but I read a lot on their forums how many people had high pitched squealing noises from the PSU depending on load in the system and even moving the mouse around. ultimately went with an Antec TruePower 650W, no issues so far.

Could also be as simple as file corruption due to the abrupt shutdown, though damage to other hardware is not completely impossible when a PSU dies.

I think it's more of a you being paranoid issue (no offense). You had a system component die on you, one that's been known to hose an entire rig's worth of electronics in the worst of cases. Now you're noticing every little thing because of the hyper-paranoia (again, no offense, it's completely innocuous) that your system probably did before the PSU died that was simply below your threshold of noticing before an issue brought your senses to become more acute. Basically you're tuned to looking for faults now, whereas before you weren't tuned to the minor things.

I say run every single test you can imaginable for 48 hours. If they pass, you're good. If you want to be doubly sure, wipe your drives and reinstall your OS after you're done testing. That way you can rule out just about everything at that point.

Thank all of you for the replies. I didn’t even really consider Windows being corrupted. I’ll try a Win reinstall and see if that rectifies the problem. I’ve been meaning to install Win 7 x64 anyway. I was just hoping to have an SSD to install it on!

And I’m not offended at all about the paranoid comments! That’s me to a ‘T’. However, I’m extremely observant and the delays and hangs were definitely not present before the PSU failure. I’m on the machine a lot and I notice when it isn’t operating perfectly.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the follow-up Yellowbeard!

Since the next wave of Intel 80Gb SSD's is supposed to be available next week, I'm going to try and pick one up and then perform a reinstall. I'll try to remember to post back with my results.

Thanks!

Well, my SSD finally arrived and I reinstalled Windows. I'm still getting the hangs and crashes. It appears that when the PSU burned out, it dragged my MB down to the depths with it. I tried updating the BIOS, clearing the CMOS, to no effect. I even tried switching out the ram and this didn't solve the problem. It looks like I'm going to have to replace the board

I'm not too surprised, since I noticed the burned electrical smell coming from the PSU, and from the CPU area of the M/B. I just would have thought that, if the M/B got fried, it would be completely dead, and not partially functional???
