PSU Fan & P4 478 HS

So actually there are two issues here:

1. PSU fan

I ?eed to replace my Antec true380 fans (92mm and 80mm), they are too noisy and oiling does not help.
Since silent is a factor for me, I had check the SPCR recommendation. The only fans on their list I can get my hands on is the Nexus, but they have note the follow under the 92mm version:

It's main weaknesses? Sleeve bearings that are unsuitable for high temperatures and a low MTBF that suggests long-term reliability may be poor

This is true for the 80mm as well as for any other Sleeve type fan (I guess).

- Is the Nexus that 'unsuitable' for a PSU solution? what should I accept if I'll do use those?


My alternative to the Nexus is AC's 'Arctic Fan 9/8 PWM'
The 92mm I'll mount as external intake (similar rear case exhaust).

- Will I be able to mount the 80mm as an exhaust? (similar to front case intake)


2. CPU HS

Like the Antec fans also my stock CPU (P4 2.4Ghz HT) HS fan has become loud.
I'm aiming for low profile since I'll be buying a new rig next year and plan to use this one (or parts of it) as a HTPC.
There is the Super Silent 4 Ultra - Silent and cheap but the stock cools a bit better.
And the Scythe SHURIKEN - Also silent, compatible with almost all sockets and cools better to allow OC, but relative to AC is expensive.

- What should I choose? Is Scythe worth the extra for its compatibility and OC? Will I get something that worth it from OC that old P4?

I wouldn't worry about the bearings at this point, the pc being almost outdated how long do the fans need to last? If the bearings do die in a year will it be anymore difficult to replace them again? What you want is quiet and compatibility, size, thickness (many psu fans are thin) and electrical.
If you plan on keeping this cpu get the scythe heat sink, In a HTCP rig you'll want all the cooling you can get w/o noise, with a lesser HS I'm sure the fan would need to ramp up to keep things cool.

You'll be lucky to get that P4 more then 200Mhz over stock speed. Not good OCers thats for sure. As for the PSU if it isn't broke then don't fix it. A PSU that uses an 80mm fan will always be a bit noisy. If you want quiet operation then get a better PSU. Though its not worth the money on that old system. I say you just deal with the system as is. Don't spend any money on it so you have more to put into the new system.

All Three fans are noisy in a way it is getting too annoying (some are loud as a power saw when on full RPM)

I think you're, I'll better off go for the low cost - in that case it means AC:

Depends on what you mean by "adequate"...

The problem I have with 'face-down coolers' is they pack themselves full of dust because there's no place for it to go!

Here's what my OEM Intel P4 478 HS looked like after a couple of months of use...

OEM P4 478 FAN BEFORE & AFTER CLEANING

Pay particular attention to the heat sink - totally clogged!

I had to clean this %$#^ thing out with an air compressor several times a year - really!

Now, look at what I'm running...

P4EE (Extreme Edition) 478 Pin OC @ 3825MHz / Tuniq Tower 120 cooler / Mountain Mods U2-UFO Opti-1203 case

I have probably cleaned my Tuniq Tower a couple of times since I've owned it - but I couldn't tell you when it was. It stays a LOT cleaner!!!

Anyway, if it was me, I'd get a tower cooler. As a matter of fact, that's what I did!

Thank you VinDSL, actually at first I'd though about the Scythe Ninja (or similar) but I'm not sure if this old system worth it..., maybe if I'll find a used one.

As for the PSU, there are some old threads on the web, telling to bypass the original PSU fan conntion to avoid it's Temp. control. I think it is because of the CFM differences:

Original fans: 92mm - Model DF1209BA - 57CFM - 36dB - 3000RPM - 0.25A - DC12V - BAll Bearing
82mm - Model DF1208BA - 41CFM - 34dB - 2900RPM - 0.20A - DC12V - BAll Bearing
Nexus fans: 92mm - Basic 27CFM ; PWM up to 43.5CFM
80mm - Basic 20CFM ; PWM up to 38CFM

In that case I have two options
1. Basic versions to connect to a molex.
2. PWM versions to connect to the M/B 3 PIN connection - will set them by BIOS to about 70% (to achieve ~1500RPM) and when PSU Temperature get to a certain point to let them run 100%. Thought of about 40C degree???

Whenever I've replaced a PSU 80mm fan, I've always just disconnected it inside the PSU, and then ran the molex plug for the fan with the wires exiting the PSU, and then just plugged the fan molex into a PSU molex connector externally. Works fine for me, just don't forget to plug the fan molex in, otherwise your PSU will cook.
