PSU for heavy duty machine

I plan to build a machine based on AMD 64 939pin, doing heavy duties, such as game, video decoding, CAD......Also will do overclocking.

Please recommand a PSU for me. I already have a case. What's the minimum power needed for this?

Is Antec PSU definitely so good? Any other good brand? Thanks

The new OCZ 600Watt is incredible!

If you dont mind noise PC Power and COoling is supposed to be extremely powerful however they are expensive.

Antec and ENermax are right on the heels of these 2.

1. OCZ 600Watt ; PCPC PSU
2. Enermax
3. Antec

4.Zalman, Seasonic, Silverstone

Antec, Fortron, OCZ, ThermalTake, Zalman, Seasonic, PCP&C, Enermax... take your pick. There's no shortage of quality PSU manufacturers these days.

Thermaltake is in a completely different league than the other ones listed... as well as fortron. THey are more for the AVG user.

OCZ and PCP&C are the #1
Enermax is #2
Antec is like 2.5

The Zalman Seasonic, SIlverstone.... stack up at 3 or 4.

THe Fortron and THermaltake are for the avg user not the high end gamer.. (Fortrons are supposed to be pretty quiet though).

Thermaltake I can understand, but Fortron? Dead wrong. You might want to talk to Edward NG over at SPCR. He had a watercooled 2.6GHz@2.1V AXP/6800GT@Ultra running off a 300W-FSP.

IIRC, Fortron also makes PSUs for PCP&C and Sparkle.

Also, Seasonic is definitely better than Antec, IMO.

EDIT: BTW, can you list the planned specs for this machine? That would really help in determining the right PSU for your needs.

I would recommend you look more at amps on the +12 volt rails than total wattage. Find a power supply with dual +12v rails with at least 12-14 amps per. That should more than suffice.

seasonic isnt any worse than any other manufacturer. their psus have proven themselves over and over again. im not saying you cant get great psus from other companies but they aint better than seasonic.

Uh yeah they are. The OCZ and PCP&C will blow the crap out of the Seasonic. If they would release a higher voltage Seasonic with the same great efficiency it might be good but it still isn't high end like the OCZ and PCP&C.

I never said it did, and i know I[/b] dont. However, those people running huge SCSI arrays, Home servers, or SLI setups (in the near future) will need >500Watt.

Where the hell did you hear that!?!? Last review i read about the OCZ is that it is severley underrated and could easily be rated much higher. As for the PCP&C it is very powerful and can be rated much higher.

my dad is a physisist and had to test his seasonic and my ocz. i got seasonic too now.

It is better in terms of efficiency. However the OCZ has more features... much stronger rails, and more power. It cant be argued, look at the specs of each and compare them.

sure the powerstream 600 has more power than a seasonic 350w. but if the seasonic were a ocz it would prolly be rated 420.

What are you talking about? If your going to make a statment like that you better back it up with somthing.

And the results? The only way to really test a PSU's output rating is to run it as hard as you can till it either shuts down or melts.

I recently bought one of those 500W modular psu's from Ultra. I was a bit wary of buying a psu from them, but so far it has been rock solid. I've had no problems whatsoever and it cleans up the inside of my case quite a bit.

You just said that a Seasonic rated at the same wattage as an OCZ will win. Well, no sh!t, thats like saying an A64 clocked at 3.2ghz will beat a Pentium. THe fact is they are not.
