I'm going to be building a PC for music production, I'm looking for a PSU that is going to be reliable and most importantly QUIET, anybody out there with experience of a similar project got any first hand recommendations?

EVGA are making some nice ones from what I have seen these days, depends on how big you need to begin with probably.

I'm an Antec fanboi myself, the CP Series are quiet and Delta made, but you need to buy the case to work with one, they are large PSU's.

Have been using one of these for years in the main years now, they are quiet.

But I'm sure are newer things out there, why I mentioned the EVGA.

Something like this maybe.

Plenty of powers there to choose from depending on needs.

We need to know the specs of the machine and your budget to give a recommendation.

I'm looking at something like 32GB RAM, 2X Internal SSD, I7 4770k

Price wise I'm not looking to break the bank but willing to pay what is necessary to get something that will perform, probably upper-mid price range

You want something with a higher wattage rating than you need, which operates passively under low load. I believe that the Supernova does in fact fit that bill.

I picked up a EVGA P2 850W PSU because silent operation is important to me. The fan does not kick on until about 450W. Basically completely silent.

While it theoretically can support Crossfire or SLI (no overclocking), I bought it for a single card so that it would be silent. It was on sale and I got it for about $75 after an AMEX offer but I would recommend it highly if you can get it for about $100. Also has a 10 year warranty and is known to be pretty reliable.

well, i built my OSX + 4790k hackintosh with a 450w corsair; since it only has a Nv 750 (no need for anything more since it won't be a games machine) it hardly uses half that.
but yeah, EVGA is pretty much the top dog these days.

still, if you want total silence, you should move the pc to another room. OR... you can buy a good aftermarket CPU cooler and replace the fans with silent models. the cpu fan will be making most of the noise, not the PSU.

Be-Quiet make great PSU's that are completely silent. Look for the Pure Power, Straight Power or Dark power series'.

I believe the Power Zone and System Power series aren't quite as silent at high loads.

I once built a media machine with a Be-Quiet L8 PSU and 2 Be Quiet fans, you literally couldn't tell if it was switched on by sound alone.

If these aren't available then the Corsair HX and HXi series are silent.

Thanks for all the helpful advice guys, after a little research I'm pretty much at a tossup between the EVGA supernova 850 P2 and the Be-Quiet Dark Power 850. For my uses would there be any noticeable difference in performance?

No.

I'm wondering what components you're planning on powering. If it's just these: "32GB RAM, 2X Internal SSD, I7 4770k", you'll be using around 100 watts and don't actually need a 850W PSU. A Seasonic G360 would be practically silent and easily powerful enough.

You'll also need to pick the right CPU and case fans if you want a quiet PC. The stock Intel fan won't cut it, and case fans will need to be very low RPM, preferably at <500 RPM.
