Components:
ASUS H87I-PLUS LGA 1150 Intel H87 Mini ITX Motherboard
Intel Pentium Processor G3220 3.0 GHz LGA 1150
Re-purposed Antec Sonata case
4-6 WD Red HDD's
graphics on cpu
no optical drive
OS will be some form of Linux built specifically for this purpose

System will obviously run 24/7.

Figure it's a good time to replace the original Antec PSU. I'm thinking 400 or 450 watts that is quiet but not fanless.

Looking for recommendations.

TIA.

At what price range? What are your feelings about rebates?

XFX Core 550W (relabeled Seasonic S12II) was $26 after rebate till yesterday, but may not be discounted that much again for 3 months if history repeats itself again.

Seasonic's next generation SSR-360GP seems like a good match at $55, very high quality and efficiency. While only 360W, it's conservatively rated and more than double the wattage needed, and like the S12II it has a ball bearing fan unlike many cheaper models so you probably won't have a fan failure within the lifespan of the system. It would be my top expected-lifespan:dollar ratio pick if you don't like rebates. I haven't seen them on sale recently but haven't really been keeping track.

If you want the best value but something that might need replaced every few years then people seem to like the after rebate price of $20 on Corsair Builder CX430... but it does have an inferior fan and capacitors compared to the two mentioned above. If you have to replace it later then the total cost and work may outweigh the initial savings.

Note that if settling for 450W or lower PSU you may need some 4 pin molex to SATA power adapters because the CX430 and SSR-360GP both have only 4 SATA power connectors. Average or better quality 500W+ PSU usually have 6 or more, but this is only a generalization.

Those are good too, but $75+ for a PSU to power a ~ 100W system seems like overkill for a couple more SATA power connectors that can be bought for a dollar or two on eBay.

^ I hope you didn't pay $8 delivered for that SATA adapter cable. They literally are $2 or less delivered on eBay, though often shipping from China with an extra 3 weeks shipping wait. Someplace like Meritline might have some in a US warehouse for fast shipping at a slightly higher cost. Newegg is starting to become almost as bad as local brick 'n mortar stores when it comes to some of their misc. cables and adapters.

I would have picked that Seasonic too unless a sale price came around on the others. For a low power system it's arguably the longest lifespan PSU available at $55, though I guess a freak event like a lightning strike could kill anything.

A B85 or H81 mobo will do and a 300W PSU. Why such heavy stuff for such a simple CPU. I have my G3220's running on a 65W pico supply. Enough power for such a CPU. Your HDD's may require an additional power usage but even then.....300W is sufficient. Buy a high efficiency(@22,5W) PSU like the Seasonic G series 360W/BeQuiet Pure Power L8 300W/Antec Earthwatts Platinium 450W.

^ Seasonic 360W G series is what the OP previously posted, has been ordered.

One thing to watch out for with a NAS is the power spike on startup if your HBA/RAID card doesn't have staggered spinup for the attached drives. However, with just 4-6 RED drives that shouldn't be much of an issue.

I'd say just get an efficient, reliable, low wattage power supply. My NAS with an 8 core opteron, 24x 5400rpm hard drives, an HBA card, and 8 total fans uses 240W with all drives showing activity. I am using a Seasonic X-650 Gold PSU and its fan never even spins.

Received noted mobo, memory and g360 psu today. Waiting on a couple of other components and start to gut Sonata case and rebuild.

Have decided to use FreeNas as OS with ZFS raid. Ultimately looking at 5 hdd's for system. Probable start with 3 and see what storage requiements look like after running for a while. Will be setting up folders for various family members and some 'cloud' storage as well.

Thanks for everyones input.

Remember that with a ZFS vdev, you cannot add or subtract devices once the vdev is created. If you make a three drive vdev (most likely RAIDZ), If you wanted to add more drives, you'd need to make an additional vdev and add it to the pool. Either that, or you're need to destroy the pool and build your new vdev with more drives from scratch.
