I currently have a cheap 400w PSU, and want to upgrade. I am totally confused in choosing a replacement. Including what is on my sig I also have 1 CD-R/1 DVD/3 80mm/1 60mm/Aero 7 HSF/1 cold cathode light. All of my rails are below what they should be especially the standby 5v (at 3.45v). I am not even able to raise the FSB or Ram, and I think (am pretty sure) its due to the PSU. I have $85-$90 max, and really do not care for a PSU with lights and or see thru covers. I am looking for the best PSU $90 bucks can buy, and I am overwhelmed by the choices. Help......

I'm sure you will get a lot of opinions on this choice....... but you can't go wrong if you get a Vantec. I'm not sure of the prices for new ones now, but I'm pretty sure you could get a Vantec 480 for that money. I use the Vantec "true" 550 and love it.

It's hard to beat SPI Sparkle PS's in bang for buck. Some are optimized for Athlon XP's, others are designed to support P4's. Suggest that you read the fine print to assure that you will get the right model.

Does anyone have recommendations on power supplies for future upgrades? Right now I'm fine with a 300W, but my cheapie is shot and I'm looking at buying something decent this time. What power would you recommend someone that wants to be able to use the same case for the next system. Currently I've got a 1.8A, so my next upgrade will likely be a 2.6C + 5900NU + 2-4 120GB WD etc. Would a Smart 350W (3800AMD) or True 380W (Sonata) be better? Should I think about getting a 400W or 450W for my next setup?

Thanks!

My TruePower 380W that case with my Sonata is great and it has 2 SATA power connectors and RPM monitoring.

get something at newegg, you could get a sparkle or fortron 350-400w psu for under 50 shipped i should think, both are quality, and both will do far better than what you have now. if you plan on upgrading heavily (more case fans, optical or disk storage etc) than a 450w would be a better choice. sparkle, fortran, antec, zalman, vantec, PC ppower and cooling, enermax....you dont need to spend all of your cash on a good one though, im certain of that

anyone know anything about A+ psus was forced to get one of those in an aopen case because they ran out of spi power supplys. So far it seems good comparable in weigth and features to the sparkle that i got with the other aopen cases.

Why is the Sonata more expensive than the 1040BII that comes with the True400 (over True380) and 4x80mm case fans instead of 2x120mm fans (2 80 installed vs 1 120 installed)?

As long as you get a high-quality power supply, you really shouldn't need anything more than 400watts even if you loaded it up with drives/cards. Those cheapo ones that claim 550watts probably would choke on 400watts of power draw.

I actually just bought this one yesterday after doing a good bit of research. (Forton is the same brand as Sparkle)

Only 300w, but thats all I really need. They also sell a 350w version.
