PSU - OCZ, Enermax, Ultra

Which PSU is the best out of the following?

1. OCZ ModStream 450W
2. OCZ PowerStream 420W
3. Enermax 460W EG465P-VE
4. Enermax Noisetaker 485W
5. Ultra X-Connect 500W

4 or 2. If you plan on expansion I would suggest 450w at least though.

You have ranked them in order of awesomeness. Your OP would be the order of preference for me, except switch #4 and #5. Other than that, I'd take them in that order.


Oh, and drop the Ultra off the list. They're just not worth it.

I have the Enermax 485W Noisetaker ATX v2.0 and think it's fine and ready for the near future. Looks pretty nice too. I got it for a good deal at about 70-some odd dollars shipped brand new. Usually they go for a little over $100.

1-4 are overkill for you system; I doubt your system would break 200 watts under a full load. 5 is junk, take it out of consideration.

THe powerstream is the most powerful and highest quality PSU there.

The Enermax Noisetaker is right behind it and is a very nice PSU as well.

The Modstream doesn't have as much power as either of these but the fact that it is modular as well as sporting a 120mm fan is a defenite plus. Still pretty powerful though.

The other Enermax is more entry level powersupply. THe regular enermax PSUs are tested at 25C something a normal PSU would never experience, the Noisetakers are tested at 40C much more realistic. I would expect it to be decent but not worth the money.

THe Ultra, there is a lot of controversy here. The Ultra has all the rails feeding off of one line which puts a lot of strain on that one cable. However the ENTIRE PSU is modular and has a sleek finish which is nice. OTOH the inside is not nice, it has very small heatsinks and capacitors, and the fans are not very high quality. Also although under a light load it is solid, if you were to put it near its peak load it craps out. I believe one reviewer uses lgihtbulbs to test PSU's. He has like 8 bulbs and lights one and tests then lights another and tests etc. The Ultra crapped out at #3 where it would only post at 4 they couldn't even do that.

If you want a pretty PSU, go with the ModStream. If you want a kick-ass psu, go with a 420W ATX 2.0 Noisetaker (the 485 you list is way overkill). If you want to waste money, go with the Ultra.

I will probably go with the OCZ PowerStream 420W housed in either the Lian Li PC6077 or Coolermaster Praetorian. If I wanted to go cheap, will the Antec Sonata and its stock PSU suffice?

None of them.
I would get the Antec Neopower 480 with Active PFC. More efficient, less harmonic noise.

Newer "regular" models are rated up to 40C operating temp: See Whisper II 2.0 specs.

I don't know why people are putting down the Ultra-X, I am using and it is very good, quite, and stable. I have a clear case, so it looks kewl too (not that it matters much performance wise).

The best you're going to get here are opinions, dude. Take what you've learned and expand it with reviews of what interests you of the listed choices. If you're looking for something definitive you aren't going to get it.
