psu question

i am building a new computer and i am looking into getting the asus p5p800 mobo and i would like to know if a psu with a 20 pin connector would work on it since it has a 24 pin connector and if there is anything special required.

also any suggestions for a psu would be apprecuated. i am looking at either an enermax 460 whisper II or antec sl450

my specs will be

P4 3.0EGhz or 3.2 when the E0 steppings become available
Asus P5P800
80gig Seagate HD
DVD
CD-RW
1 gig Ram
ATI radeon 9700 pro
couple case fans
and i would like some room to overclock some andto be able to upgrade latter on without having to get a new psu in the next few years

You can get a 24 pin to 20 pin converter for cheap.


Well, as always I suggest most people that want to go on a budget to get a combo drive that burns dvds, cdrs, and plays back those formats too. I personally have the Antec NeoPower 480 and its badass. It's a bit over 100$ but WELL worth it.

i already have the dvd and cdrw along with the hd from the computer this one is gonna replace and they are decent enough to keep around for a while longer

yes you can plug the 20 pin into the 24 pin socket. You just have to make sure it is plugged in correctly. I powered a 24 pin board with a 20 pin powersupply for a while. No adapters needed. Check in the motherboard manual.

thanks i wanted to make sure before i bought something that didnt work also do you think those psu would be enough juice to run that system with some room to overclock and for some future upgrades for a few years.

Hi brad and Welcome to the forums!

I think you should just get the correct PSU. Especially if you wanna OC. I've noticed that peeps seem to have had problems with using a 20 pin PSU in a 24 pin mobo. And I'd be wary of the converter. It's a 24 pin mobo for a reason. Just use the search function above and type in 20 pin connector to see various threads asking for help in diagnosing problems that are eventually traced to using a 20 pin psu in a 24 pin mobo.

EDIT: In some of the threads that pop-up in the search you will find recommendations for make/model of a 24 pin psu too.
