Ok so this is my psu SILVERSTONE ST75F-P 750W ATX 12V
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817256059

This is the psu in my new build, had the build since November 2010.
I have a silver stone tj09, which the psu sits at the bottom of the case.

There is a mesh at the bottom of the case for the fan to get cool air, versus getting air from inside the case.

I noticed a rattling so i figured it was just dust getting into the psu so i flipped the psu so the fan is faceing inside the case.
It made the rattling pretty much unnoticable, espcially with a headset on, but ive been noticing the rattling now when i dont have the headset on.

So tonight i took the grill off the psu and cleaned the fan, incase of dust, and blew the dust out of the psu.

I again flipped the psu so the fan is not facing the inside of the case but the rattling is still there, and once i shut down i can hear the fan stopping, as if it is hitting something but it doesnt look like the fan is actually hitting anythig or any loose wires.

Is this just a bad fan? Is there any way to fix this without having to rma?
My old psu wont be able to support my new build so if i rma i wont be able to use my pc till my psu returns.

Also im 100% sure its the psu fan because i stopped the fan while the pc was on and the rattling stopped.

1. RMA your PSU.
2. Get a replacement fan and solder/attach the wires to the PCB.

Best option would be to RMA the PSU if it is still within the warranty period. Replacing the fan might void your warranty.

Actually, opening it up to clean the fan probably voided the warranty, if any "warranty void" stickers had to be broken.

No, it has a grill you can unscrew and take off, i didnt actaully open the psu.

I guess ill have to rma.

The rattling may be from a loose screw holding a fan or fan grill, or a fan blade is hitting a wire. You may be able to push or pull any such wire away from the fan by poking through the fan or grill openings with a rod made of plastic or wood (straw, chopstick), but first unplug the AC power cord, and do not under any circumstances use something made of metal, not even if it's covered with plastic tape.

The sleeve bearing in the fan is going bad. Not much you can do about that except RMA it. Replacing the fan on your own will void your warranty.

you can oil them as a last resort, it worked for me many times
http://www.dansdata.com/fanmaint.htm

regular red label 3-in-one oil which can be found anywhere will work fine but after 6 months to a year it will gum up and turn into like a gel but you can to oil it again. you can get the blue label one which is supposed to last longer i never found it in a store tho so might have to buy it online
http://www.3inone.com/products/motor-oil/

if u peel the sticker off it might not want to stick back on but regular scotch tape works just fine

Honestly id rather replace the fan and void the warrrenty.
I dont want to have to go two weeks without my pc again, i had to rma my mobo too.

The only thing im worried about, with replacing the fan, is the fact that its dangerous to open up to psu.

Is this rattling fan bad or just annoying?

Can this cause the psu to fail or die?

just open it up its perfectly safe as long as u dont go poking anything inside. it prolly wont hurt anything if u left it alone completely unless the fan got so bad that it stopped spinning and psu overheated. like i said i had the exact same problem with many many different fans and oil fixes every time.

so do you think its ok to just use this psu untill the fan dies and then just buy a new psu when that time comes?

i just dont want the psu to die and take the whole pc with it.

as long as its not spinning too slowly already at this point. i suppose if you dont mind the noise then it is usable. im not sure what happens when they overheat. whether it takes the whole pc with it is a matter of chance, you need to weigh the risk. ive been using a psu with bad visibly leaking capacitors for years D:

ok so today i found my old psu
a seasonic ss-600ht
600w, i thought it was only a 500w
for some reason i cant find any specs on the psu on google, since its no longer made.

my question is could this psu support my current build while my 750w is in the rma process

here is my current build.
GIGABYTE GA-X58-USB3 LGA 1366
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128456
Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115211
DUAL GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125352
Two G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 for 8gbs total
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231310
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152185

i also have 5 total 120mm case fans, not including the cpu heatsink fan or the gpu card fans.

i would also remove one of my 460s while in the rma process

so should this psu be enough to support my system?

It looks like that PSU has 36A on the 12v rail...so as long as it's in good condition, it should get you by.

Look at your amperage rating lable on the side of the old seasonic & compare it to the unit you are RMAing. You might find the seasonic is a better quality unit.

really? im not as familiar with psu as i am with other hardware
but the 600w wouldnt be able to support both my cards considering theres only two 6 pin connectors.

still i doubt a 600w would be able to support my system, i took that psutest and i was above 600ws.
while in the rma process im only going to use one of my cards but once i get my psu back i will be running both.
