PSUs?

Ok, I've heard all these people on the forums saying they've heard how cheap PSUs fry their systems and I would like to know what kinds of problems a cheap generic PSU could cause, and possibly ruin the systems they power.

One main issue is that if a generic PSU gets overloaded, often it will simply blow up instead of kindly shutting down. This can take components with it.

Additionally, they're just of cheap overall quality and generally are insufficient to power your system adequately. A good quality 350W will be better than a generic 600W.

well I was looking at this Link Depot PSU and haven't really heard anything about this manufacturer. Link Depot is the same as TTGI/SuperFlower. Do you think this PSU would pose a threat to a system it would be powering? I'm just a casual overclocker and it would be powering these components:
Athlon 64 3000+
DFI NF4 Ultra-D
6600GT (PCIe)
1x 120 gig seagate barracuda

If "Link Depot" is indeed TTGI, you should be fine.

Could you power that system with that PSU? Sure. But you won't have a ton of upgrade room with only 20A on the +12V rail -- that's very low for a "450W" PSU, and you'd easily max it out with two 6800GTs (or maybe even two 6600GTs and a high-end CPU). And I have no clue about the quality of the components used in that thing, but I'm generally wary of cheaper PSUs, especially ones with blue lights.

i lost a motherboard, cpu, cd-r, and 3 hard-drives

that good enough for you?

(that was actually the result of a series of power dips that overstressed the psu and caused it to literally blow up, so maybe the moral is to use a ups, although a high-quality psu shouldn't blowup during brownouts either)
