I haven't been to the gym in about a month because I was sick for a couple weeks, then was really busy with school. So today I went, and near the end of my workout I was feeling nauseous and light-headed. I know this feeling: it's happened before. So I went to lie down on a mat, then finished up with some sit-ups. As I went on my way back to the locker room, I knew my stomach wasn't happy, so I ran the last few steps to the bathroom and barely made it to a stall, where I met my lunch again.

This always happens when I do an intense workout after a period of inactivity. Does anyone know why this happens? Do I just have to take my workouts slower when I've been inactive, or is my body just shocked by the sudden burst of exercise? I'd be interested in the anatomical reason for why this happens, but I'd also like to know how to avoid it.

Very high intensity or very high volume can cause that for me. I usually feel nauseous by the end of my workouts, but I'm usually lifting with 75-95% of my maxes. I'm also very low carbing, so that doesn't help things any. It doesn't help you were just sick.

Used to happen to me on squat days. You're going too heavy, eating too close to your workout, and/or drinking too much water. Move your workout away from your eating or reduce your intensity.

I ate 4 hours before so that I had time to digest (so much for that), since I hate getting cramps. I guess I'll just have to take it slower when I first get back on a routine, since I usually do the same intensity when I've gone a few times and this doesn't happen. I also drink plenty of water during my workout - I tend to visit the fountain after I finish with each exercise. Thanks for the input.

It's a relatively common occurrence among some people and there are numerous possible causes. These include dehydration, hormonal release from high intensity exercise, blood being driven away from the GI tract and to the muscles, heat exhaustion, oxygen deficiency and so on. You can read more here and here.
