Just what the message title says.

The computer is fine when I plug it in, but after I am done with my headphones and want to use the external speakers, pulling out the microphone causes my computer to shut down immediately.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

That could create a minor power hiccup. The port has a mechanical switch that shorts out the internal speakers when the headphone jack is inserted. Pulling it out may cause a slight hiccup in your power distribution by suddenly having the internal speakers require some voltage.

Try removing your headphones by using the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE icon in the notification tray.

The safly remove hardware is for USB and other devices that windows can detect is plugged in. The OS can't tell if you have standard headphones plugged in or not.

Now a power glitch while unplugging the head sets may be an issue. But it seams it may be more closly tied to a grounding issue. What motherboard and what case do you have? Better yet what kind of connector does the case have for its front audio connection? Just trying to figure out if you can set it up to not cut out the speakers when the headphones are plugged in and also if there may be any grounding issues. I've had a problem in the past with my Antec 900 case where plugging and unplugging things into the front panel caused an instant shutdown from a static discharge.

I tried using the "safely remove hardware" option, but it does not list my mic/headphone connections.

My motherboard is an Asus P5Q deluxe and I have an Antec 1200 case. I am using the connections on the front of that case.

The problem is intermittent and it sounds like it may be a static discharge. It happens about 1/3 of the time.

Common problem on the 900 like i said. Doesn't surprise me that the 1200 has the same issue. Just ground yourself before you touch the case.
