Geez, if only. That is so not the way it works. I have little over half a decade's worth of Skype chat logs of editorial/news guys ranting to me about how tough it is to get some of the OEMs to even send enough product to review. You really have to hound those guys sometimes. This gives the ad guys more leverage with the OEMs, sure, but not much for the editorial or community teams.

Plus, as a side note, the two editorial teams will still be separate, so there's no change there.

Once you control the ads, (which is what brings in the $$$), then, it is game over is it not ? The ad people can dictate what they want, and under their terms. OEMs would have no choice, if they wanted to advertise something on these sites, which are part of the biggest 'tech' based ones out there.
Before, it was different entities, now, it is one big umbrella.
Will this be abused ? No idea.

As for the two editorial teams being separate, maybe, maybe not. They have more freedom now to collaborate together, their is no competition wall to separate them. Will this be abused ? Only time will tell.

My main point is, it is always sad when we lose competition, we need more of it, not less.

I doubt this is going to change much on the forum side realistically, most of the quality people around here that I cared about have already left long ago.

Be honest with yourself and deal with the fact that these forums have been filled with shitty, unfunny trolls and gimmick accounts for years and all the creativity and fun has mostly diminished away.

It's a bit silly to just install another moderator that no one has ever heard of, but that's certainly not the first time that's happened here so I can't even feign surprise. I hope you have better luck than the last 'sound and fury' PR mouthpiece we had who just disappeared on us.

Anandtech and the community here will be treated with the respect it rightfully deserves as peers and colleagues and fellow tech enthusiasts. The namesake may have moved on, but the essence remains. Thanks for bringing this up. Instituting a no GRAPES policy on Tom's Hardware was vetted by the moderators and the community at large, and arose due to a tremendous number of problems we were encountering. What works for Tom's may not work for Anandtech, and what works for Anandtech may not work for Tom's. The two are very different communities culturally and by identity. As I mentioned in my FAQ above, we won't be exporting any policies to or from - and that includes the no GRAPES policy.

Again, totally not the way it works. The ad guys put together sales pitches and offer them to the OEMs. They usually provide them ala carte, some from this site, some from another, targeted based on audience or subject. The ad sales guys usually talk to the marketing departments at OEMs. Our ad guys don't have anything to do with our editorial peeps, and their marketing guys usually don't have anything to do with their technical development and outreach guys. Asking an OEM for hardware to review is a completely separate process that originates with editorial. It's a lot more compartmentalized than you'd think.
