Apart from updating the firmware (which does not need a special cable, just connect it to the computer normally), there shouldn't be any need to directly access the firmware code on a drive..
It is probably something like a seagate drive from 7-10 years ago, which had that problem where they froze up and couldnt be accessed without doing some hack that required a special cable.
