Purchasing a new car without any dealership intervention?

Is this even possible? I've noticed that almost every car manufacturer allows you to apply for financing online. I've never done it, but if you get approved, does this mean you can delete the dealership from the entire purchase process? (I am 99.999% sure it does not mean that.)

Anyone can chime in? I think if some dealership salesmen were taken out of the picture, many people would just set everything up online, then go to a drop shop to pick their cars up. I know I would.

At one time you could order a car and pick it up at the factory. Today a dealer has to be involved.

lol, when my father did this (he went through his credit union) no one wanted to talk to him, or told him that they couldn't offer any discounts whatsoever. More than a handful of dealerships told him that he could finance the car, wait three months, and then pay it off in full.

I've even seen a douchebag dealership here in Queens that told my friend that the "bank" will not release a car that he wanted to pay cash for.

dealer has to be involved due to dealership franchise laws.

you can get pre-approved for financing from their in-house financing people, but you still have to take that to a dealer to actually buy something with it.

When I last bought a car, I told the dealer what my credit union's rate was and that if they could beat it, I'd finance through them. They beat it so that was that.

This, but before you go to the dealer, shop around for internet quotes (edmunds does a pretty good job of hitting a lot of dealers, i think) and then show up at the dealer with the price you want, and talk to their internet guy.

Don't do this without first checking what specials the manufacturer is running. I've twice gotten 0.9% APR through the manufacturer (Ford and Mazda). I don't think any bank will touch that rate.

I've never gone through a bank, the dealer was always able to give me a better rate.
