When one is doing pushups, does it matter where your hands are? Should they be at shoulder width or what?
Also, do pushups actualy do anything in terms of musle tone?

Yes, yes they do...

Closer to your body focuses on shoulders and triceps, farther away is chest. There's a million variations to pushups if you get bored of the standard kind

The way I was taught was to have your hands directly beneath your shoulders, and your arms should be straight. Although you can vary it as b0mbrman said, depending on which are you want to work.

Since my shoulder surgery I can only do like 5 pushups before my shoulder gives out and I can't do them anymore. Man my shoulder is weak...

They won't tone you nor will they help with size mabe some strength but mostly endurance. If you want to tone you have to diet and do cardio eat right etc and loose fat. And doing pushups won't make that certain area more toned just liek situps wont give you a 6 pack becuase you can't reduce fat from just a specific area it has to be done to the whole body.

If you want to get more toned and maintain as much of your current muscle and strength you will have to work out with weights bench press, sholder press etc and cut your calories a bit plus maintain protein consumption.

Start with less resistance then...instead of doing them from your feet, do them from your knees...if that's still too much, start on your hips.

No reason to kill yourself while you're trying to build yourself back up

tone? what's that mean?

oh, just a sidenote to scare you... doing any shoulder load bearing exercise such as a pushup/bench press at further than shoulder width increases the chances of further shoulder damage as well as muscle damage to the pectorals. Even with proper form...

tone is when you can see your muscles, viens, fibers..ect., I like doing triangle pushups, form a triangle with your index fingers and thumbs and go to town, really feel the burn in tri's and chest.

If you want to mimic the muscles used for incline bench press, try decline pushups with your feet elevated.

Myself, I like to mimic a strong decline bench press when I do pushups, so for that I do the pushups standing upright with a slight lean forward, pushing my hands against the wall.

they say even 20 pushups every morning as you wake up can do wonders
i dunno this first hand since i am too lazy to try lol
