So embarrassing details aplenty: A few months ago my GF decided to surprise me with a few naughty pics. I of course kept them on my computer.

Well now, I need to send my computer in to get something still under warranty replaced. I double checked with costumer service and they assured me I didn't need to send my hard drive.

My GF is flipping out and convinced that if I send it in some pervy computer tech is going to find the pictures and post them all over the internet. I keep trying to explain to her that this will not happen and with out the HDD they have nothing.

Please Anand tech, do me a favor and back me up on this. If I have the hard drive, they don't have the pictures.

Did you clear the flux capacitors? All info stored on the HD gets buffered to the flux capacitors. This info can easily be restored. I wouldn't be suprised if those pics get uploaded to the internet shortly.

I took the whole 250GB HDD out of the computer then turned on the power to show her that it just says boot error. But that isnt enough to convince her.

RAM in your laptop is volatile. Disconnect the AC adapter and take out the battery for a few hours if you are super paranoid.

Without the hdd, no data on the average consumer laptop. Unless you have it on a SD card in the memory card reader, in which case that is non-volatile memory...
