Only certain types of pics stay resident in the system memory- please post the files and I'll take a look at the coding to make sure they aren't this type of file.

I knew this was a troll to begin with. What real AT member takes their computer in to a repair shop?

You could have placed them into a zip or a rar file with a strong password. The only "crack" out there for them these days are brute force, meaning if you used a decent 12 or 16 digit strong password, it would likely take an army of a million computers over a year to break.

Drive Physically removed from computer = no way they can see the files.

In theory, they MIGHT be resident in memory, but, they would have to pull the info within about 30 seconds or so of the computer being shut down, much beyond that, they can't really read anything from the memory.

Please note: If you "deleted" the files, and thought they were gone, then they could be read with just about any disk/partition recovery software.....

Explanation so that your GF can understand it: (also most 1st graders will understand it. I certainly hope your GF isn't actually a first grader, cause that would be pretty fvcked up!)

I have a piece of paper with a X written on it.
It's inside of a box.

I take the piece of paper out of the box.
I put the piece of paper in my pocket.

I mail the empty box to Dell

Does Dell see what's written on the piece of paper?

Yes, because of the persistent memory of the box that lasts for 9 years.

Here's a thought: either she accepts your argument (that files are only permanently stored on hard drives in most computers, and files copied to RAM or other volatile media will be completely gone after the machine is powered down), which is the truth, or she goes out and buys you an equivalent computer. Tonight.

Okay I'll ruin the fun. If the hard drive is out of the computer you're safe. Even if it was stored in your memory (RAM) it would have been cleared once you shut down.

Now where's the pics damnit.

As Fobot pointed out, that's not necessarily true about RAM.

You could have placed them into a zip or a rar file with a strong password. The only "crack" out there for them these days are brute force, meaning if you used a decent 12 or 16 digit strong password, it would likely take an army of a million computers over a year to break.

Ironically, you believe that deleting something won't make it go away, but encrypting it will? What do you think encryption does? Magically make the original unencrypted stuff vanish from the hard drive? Nope, it saves a new copy - this time encrypted - and deletes the old unencrypted copy. Now, if you originally save it in an encrypted form, you're fine. But, if you're RARing them, I assume it's already on the hard drive.

edit: I heard a collective "uh oh" of muffled voices after I hit reply.

Dude she sounds like she's looking for an excuse to flip out.

The photos are stored permanently on the HDD. If you take that out, there is NO other way that the system you send in would have the pictures in it. Where would they be stored? The RAM clears almost instantly, and definitely each time you shut off the computer. If she's actually googling all the things that people in this thread are talking about then she's gullible, or just looking for an excuse to be a pain in the ass.
