President Vladimir Putin said Friday that Russia’s armed forces, backed by its nuclear arsenal, were ready to meet any aggression, declaring at a pro-Kremlin youth camp that foreign states should understand: “It’s best not to mess with us.”

“Russia is far from being involved in any large-scale conflicts,” he said at the camp on the banks of Lake Seliger. “We don’t want that and don’t plan on it. But naturally, we should always be ready to repel any aggression towards Russia.

I support a western military buildup waiting just outside Ukraine, able to respond to aggression against Kiev. Giving us the distance to tell Kiev not to be stupid.

That would be a concern. However, I doubt the Ukraine would be stupid enough to attempt to try invading Russia without provocation.

Uh...no. The other NATO nations would never go for that. Realistic options are a permanent NATO contingent based in Poland and much larger rotational basing in the Baltic NATO nations. Accelerated deployment of the Aegis Ashore system to Poland and deliveries of advanced anti-tank/anti-air systems to those same nations should be made as well.

Putin has also managed the almost unimaginable feat of propelling Sweden and Finland into the arms of NATO. Both are expected to sign host nation agreements shortly. If the situation deteriorates further the other EU governments could entice an already concerned Sweden to join which would probably result in Finland following.
