It's a balance of power thing. We have an idiot in charge so Russia has to have one too. I think they got the smarter idiot though.

He said he doesn't want to stay in power much longer.

Smarter, by pointing nuclear missiles at Europe? If so, we could always follow up and do the same.
*ahem, honestly though this situation with Russia is of concern. Perhaps it should be played in the sense that it's Russia barking without much bite behind the bark. I would certainly consider if not outright invite them to HAVE the missile defense - and to work together on it.

I think that missiles would be aimed at Europe despite the anti-missile site. The EU has been running a massive anti-Russian propaganda campaign among its population, recent revelations have surfaced that European spy agencies are gathering private info on Putin (putting a new spin on UK involvement in the Litvinenko affair), etc. The EU wants this to further goad its population. They want a war. And the US should not be involved - don't protect Europe in any sort of missile defense.

How do we even know that the original targets were ever changed to begin with. Just because Yeltsin said so? There was never any real proof that I know of. And how is pointing missles at Europe suppose to threaten us?
...repeatedly criticized the U.S. as dangerous and hypocritical...

He can stay in power as long as he wants?
If so, nice dictatorship Russia is.
"After the death of Mahatma Gandhi," he added, with a smile, "I have nobody to talk to."

Go Putin! At least one superpower isn't afraid to stand up to Bush's BS.
Unlike the barking Chavez, Putin has a little bite to his statements with that world-ending arsenal of nuclear ICBMs.

You'd like that wouldn't you. I can imagine how you'd demonize us if we pointed nuclear missiles at Europe. Praise be to Putin for it eh?

Calling Russia a dictatorship is as silly as calling USA a dictatorship.
And saying Putin will break the term limit and stay in power after his term is over is as presumptive as saying Bush will stay in power beyond his term. These are simply sensational remarks which are based on nothing but hot air.

Big element to the new cold war :
CHINA
China is a global superpower now, by two factors :
(1)- Economy
(2)- Modernizing Military (Boomer subs, anti-satellite weaponry, ICBMs, etc)
I think China will be interesting to watch during this build-up of hostility. Unlike Russia, China has the economy and the guts to *really* put the bite into a potential enemy. I'm also fairly confident that China is envious of Russia's massive petrochemical and natural resource assets, proven and unproven.
Putin is an antique, a 20th century cretin just like Bush I and II. What Russia really needs is probably impossible now, with the power and wealth being consolidated amongst a band of thieves and gangsters. Russia needs someone with the balls to purge the country of it's mafia and corrupt business elite. Russia needs someone with a fresh optimism and the brain to back it up.
