Putting a pet down is one way to turn a grown man into a sobbing mess

Had to put our 14 year old pooch down today. Her hips have been bad since Christmas time. Was starting have real bad bowel incontinence around then too.

Last week her health fell off a cliff. She hadn't eaten in close to three days. She couldn't get herself picked up off the floor and I had to carry her outside and back in to go to the bathroom.

Wife and I talked it over and made the decision yesterday to take her in to the vet.

Spent the whole time with her while in the room and said our goodbyes. Still tear up thinking about it a couple hours later.

It was the right choice, but doesn't make it hurt any less.

Farewell Cassie.

Very sorry to hear about Cassie. We don't have pets but I have seen how what you went through affected close friends - it's been 8 years and they still have their two dogs' collars hanging off the corner of a photo in their dining room.

Truly pets become part of the family.

Best to you and visgf.

I've been through the same thing and even thinking about it makes me tear up. Kudos to you for staying with her until the end.

Sorry for your loss. We have quite a menagerie of cats and dogs and the loss of each one over the years rips another piece out of me, it never gets any easier.

In for a bit of a double gut punch on this one because I need to explain to the kids tonight what happened today. We had them say "goodbye to Cassie" before they left this morning. But I didn't want them (more my 6 year old than the 2 year old) being distracted at school.

Will have to break it to her tonight what happened. It might go better than I think, but I just don't know.

I know the feeling; the wife and I have had to put down 3 dogs and a cat in our relationship and each one is harder than the last. We always stay with them until the end.

Having to explain to the kids has got to be rough.

My condolences to your family.

Wife had to give up her pup after 14 years just before XMass.
She still tears up over him and worries that the other will be slipping soon (1.5 years younger)

This was her first pet

About 5 years ago we had to put down our family dog of about 14 years. About a week later, we had to put down the other one of about 13 years. We had them both since I was around 10 years old.

One of the shittiest weeks of my life

it's always sad, but I look at it like any animal will only be in your life for a brief time. your job is to provide them with the best life possible, and if you've done that, you can put them down knowing that they had a happy life.

About 3 years ago came home and found the 14 year old dead laying out as normal at the back door. Vet said it was most likely a heart attack.

So sorry for your loss.
I took solace in this.... And I am NOT a religious man by ANY means...
But it gets me... Even posting here for you... It gets me.
Cassie is waiting for you.....

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

My dog went through exactly what you described and we had to come to the same conclusion. When I mean exactly I really do mean it; my last few days were spent holding my german sheppard's chest up while she went to the bathroom.

The tipping point was when I had let her outside and she came back inside only to lose bowel control within 30 seconds of coming indoors. She made a face I'll never forget...it was like she was apologizing for being old. I was super depressed from that point until we took her in a day later to end her suffering. I made the stupid decision not to be there when she passed away (I was younger).

regret wagon inc, whiskey needed.
