Putting a XP3000+ on a non-supported board?

What would happen if I put a 3000+ (166MhZ FSB) on a board that doesn't list it as a supported CPU? I just bought this CPU and my motherboard went all flakey so I really want to test it to make sure it works. All I have is a K7S5A which doesn't support it (it only has 133Mhz FSB).

Any chance I would wreck the thing, or would it just run at 133MhZ FSB?

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but what bios and settings did you use for the AN7 to get 220fsb? I'm using the same board and processor as you, running stable at 2460mhz (205 * 12), and using 2 * 512mb ocz vx gold pc4000 memory and I can't get it stable at higher fsb, unless using a memory divider, which kills performance. Otherwise the board won't even post at 220fsb. Any suggestions?

Thread jacker! J/K. I would think when you get into a FSB that much out of spec, it's probably a luck of the draw kinda thing as to whether your board or his board will do it.

Ok, getting back to your post, does the board let you adjust the fsb? because I ran my old asus a7v333 at 160fsb, and it was like 95% stable, even though the board only supported 133fsb. When I backed down to like 145fsb, then it ran without any issues, so I would'ne worry too much about the processor not being "officially" supported.

133 is what it officially supports, but that's not necessarily the top end. It does depend on your bios options-you may be able to run 166. It would be a mobo overclock to meet the processor's specs. Also, I don't think that your mobo will do this, but many allow for running the FSB out of sync with the memory speeds. If that's an option, it's entirely safe, but the AXP's are known to suffer quite a bit with lesser memory bandwidth.

The bios for the K7S5A has 3 choices when it comes to FSB / memory. 100/100, 100/133 & 133/133.

This is just a temporary thing until I get my other motherboard repaired/replaced. My main concern was that this is a barton core CPU and the K7S5A is meant for the previous generation (thoroughbred?).

At any rate, it looks like I won't blow anything up so I'm going to stick it in tonight and see what happens.
