Putting dog to sleep tomorrow

Sucks pretty bad, he was a gift from my parents for Christmas when I was 5. He's a black and white corgi. He's been around for every major event in my life and tomorrow I'm taking him in to put him to sleep. He's lived a good life, we have a big back yard that he's been able to play in, and before the other houses moved in he was able to roam the neighborhood freely and enjoy the area. Lately he has been degrading rapidly, he hasn't been able to move his rear legs quite as well and usually just drags them around. His eye sight is fading out, and his hearing is already shot.

I feel like he could stay around a few more months if I didn't do it now, but his quality of life is getting lower and he's begun to refuse dog food. I'm still trying to convince myself it's not necessary, but I know it is. I'm going to go stay at home tonight and spend one more evening with him since I've been at college and haven't seem him much this last year and a half.

Here's to the best dog I've ever known. Solomon, you will be missed and though I will have other dogs in my life, he will hold a special place with me always.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

It sure is tough when you have to go through something like this. I have a Corgi too and shes 10 and starting to show her age. Hate to think I will be going through this too probably in a few years....

Just try to remember all the good times with Solomon. He's going to be a lot better off then if he gets any worse and suffers.....I had a 18+ year old Collie Shepherd mix I had put down last year and He too was having trouble with his back legs. I left it drag on too long and wont ever do that again......

Corgis are the only little dogs worth their salt; they've got all the big personality of a large dog packed into the short-legged little package.

I agree 100%. All my family has small dogs except for us with our three corgis, and there is nothing like them. I'd vote them as one of the best family dogs you can get. They are smart, playful, loving, and have energy to spare.

Thanks, it means a lot to have people who understand the loss of a pet. My whole family is pretty much devastated.

Losing a pet is tough, but it's some consolation to know they've lived a long and good life. It's not what you do today that matters, but what you've done every other day and it sounds like you have nothing to regret.

Why should it be that God (or god) spelled backward is dog ? It's not just a coincidence. Unless they're severely beaten, starved, or fall victim to rabies, dogs demonstrate the closest thing to ''god-love" that humans can experience.
No matter how much a dog is ignored or neglected?or sharply spoken to?no matter how often you forget to feed or water him or her when there are other things on your mind, your dog is still there, gazing at you adoringly, eyes brimming over with pure love. No matter how badly a dog is treated, he or she is still ready to protect you, defend you, and love you. The wells of understanding and compassion are fathoms deep. A dog forgives and forgives and forgives?endlessly. Nothing you do, short of violent and repeated beatings, will kill a dog's undying love for and loyalty to both master or mistress.

A dog is not only your best friend, but also the best example you'll ever have of what love is all about. It's taught (falsely and incorrectly) by some transmigration doctrines that the next step up in reincarnation from dog form is human form?Wrong as such doctrine is, I wonder why those who believe in it consider from dog to human one level up. Dogs are more patient, faithful, loyal and loving, forgiving and compassionate than most humans?.

I share your sorrow. I put down Fatdog a while back. She was 16 and the bestest friend ever. She was deaf, going blind, but always happy. Something inside let go causing her to be in pain and I just couldn't let her go on like that.

I've been where you are. This is one of the hardest things you will ever go through. Hang in there, you're doing the best for him. If you have any pictures, please post them so others can see him, and just remember the love that was unconditionally given by a small animal.

As much as it sucks, you will feel better looking back that you had one last night together, and that you can be there in the end for him, making a decision we can't even make for ourselves ... to ease his pain and hold him close and tell him he's a good boy while he goes.
