I've given literally 5 hours notice before. Finished out the day & that was it. Started the new job the next day. There's no legal requirement to provide any notice. It's just custom.

Give notice, that today is your last day, don't just walk out. You want that last pay check sooner rather than later don't you?

1 week is more than enough notice for a part time job. They might not agree, but fuck them. Doubly so if you aren't going to use this job as a ref. later.

Good luck with your new position.

There's no right answer here. You are not obligated to provide any notice, the two weeks is a professional courtesy that you provide to demonstrate professionalism and hopefully stay on good terms with your soon to be former managers and coworkers. i.e. someday you might come back looking for another job, and you want them to remember that you were professional in your job and in your exit.

That said, it sounds like a shitty job and I would not jeopordize my chance at the new job just to follow custom. I would tell the new place that you would like to provide 2 weeks notice to your existing employer, but if they need you sooner than that, you will work it out.

If they do want you sooner than the two weeks, go to your existing manager and explain the situation. If they're reasonable, they won't hold it against you.

That part time position is not even worth putting on your resume so just don't show up and don't pick up the phone when they call.

Why blemish your own reputation like that? If I had a co-worker that did that, I would never recommend them for a job, and if I ever became a manager I would not hire them. The world is smaller than you think, especially in a specific industry and region.

Op, you live in a right to work State. Since you don't care about a referral, don't give them any notice.

I will probably do this. I was not sure what the proper etiquette is. I am fresh out of College and all I was ever taught to do was give 2 weeks. I honestly thought it was required.

Required? They aren't required to give you notice when they lay you off or fire you...

In this instance, once you know you have the other job...tell them you're done. Give them as much notice as you want...or none at all.

I used to tell contractors at 3:30 on Friday..."Oh, by the way...call the hall. I have another job to start on Monday morning. See ya."

(yes, I know...totally different work environment...different "rules.")

Probably why you will never be a manager. You subscribe to the "it will go on your permanent record!" fallacy. In reality there is no permanent record. No one in their right mind would list a part time gig they did for 3 weeks on their resume.

So, I am currently employed but have been going on interviews. For some reason, the company I am at hires some people part time for a few months before bringing them on-board. Honestly, I think its BS, but I work in IT and do some pretty important things here. On top of that, I am locked into working less than 26 hours a week which is less hours than I was allowed to work in College.

I have been speaking with another company and an offer was made. The pay is more than I am getting right now, 40+ hours a week, bennies, and they will help pay for certs (Cisco Gold Partner). They want to know if I could start right away. I am thinking about coming to work on Monday and telling them that Friday will be my last day.

I have only been here maybe 3.5 weeks. I figured telling them I was leaving on Friday would be okay since I barely work and I am only part time.

I mostly need to leave here ASAP because I would like to start my benefits paperwork at the new job so I can start insurance and everything on the 1st of the month.

What are your thoughts on this? I probably won't get a good reference from this place, but thats fine with me. I have tons of other references. What do I have to lose?

Does this mean I finally get to stop paying for your insurance?

Glad things are going so well for you! Always like to hear success stories around here.

as long as the bosses aren't assholes, I'm sure they'll completely understand why a part-time employee would give up the gig for a full-time offer.

Whip your dick out on your manager's desk and start doing the Gangnam Style dance. They'll get the idea.

I'm through giving notice. Period. I don't care how nice they were or anything. When it best suits me I'll leave and that will be it. It will likely be on a Friday as well so I can have the weekend off and start new job on a Monday. I'm sick of how we have to give notice yet those mf'ers can fire you on a moment's notice and that doesn't reflect badly on them.

F em. A job like that shouldnt even be on your resume. Interviewers will always ask...why where you there for less than 1 month? If you can give a weeks notice fine, but I wouldnt sweat it. I would come in just to say I quit, then leave. And thats only if I had personal stuff at my workstation that I needed to get. Otherwise, I'd just quit by email or phone.

Id just quit showing up tbh. A phone call at the most if I wasn't busy watching tv or something more important.

I don't think it has to be anything negative. I'm sure if the OP just went in and told their boss that they found a full time gig, the boss would understand completely.

We just had a temp guy leave because his full time landscaping job started back up. No hard feelings at all. We even threw him a going away party.

If you don't have any intentions of ever going back to them, or worries that you will come across them in the future; give them the 1 week notice.

You will burn bridges, but, it sounds like that is OK with these guys.

Another corporate kiss ass. Sorry when I leave it's because the job sucked ass and I didn't like working for you. They aren't your friends.

That was my last job. I hated that place so much I had to quit in person. Just so I could spout off for a half hour before I left.

It doesn't sound like the OP wants to leave because of a hatred for the company. Just time to move on.

week should be fine, they probably wouldn't be hurt if you quit on the spot, or they might ask you to leave that day if you do give notice

What the hell are you talking about? Nothing in my post had anything to do with a resume. It was about protecting professional relationships.

Those mf'ers can fire you on a moments notice but often keep paying out, either on a severance package or through unemployment, so you have hooks into them far more than they have hooks into you.

Where does it say that?

"Better full time job with perks, see ya!" "Send me my last check by mail, g"by."
Get that job offer on paper first.
