Putting together a new gaming rig. Looking for a good monitor

Hey guys! I'm excited to build a gaming rig after not having one over over 3 years.

It's gonna have something along the lines of 3770k, and 290x hopefully.

I'm looking for a great bang for buck 120hz monitor, I don't mind paying more for more quality though. I saw a 200 dollar 24" ultrasharp for sale but I really wanted to try 120hz gaming. I think a 27" 1440p would be nice with my specs?

Any recommendations?

With only a single 290X, I would stick with a 1080P display, and OC your CPU if you can. Otherwise you arent going to have enough horse power to push 120fps with a 1440P.

Also, pretty sure this should be in Video Cards and Graphics.

Oh ok. So is there a 1080p 120hz monitor thats recommended? Or should I just get an ultrasharp

Oh hell no.

You need at least 1920x1200 so you can play old games at 1600x1200.

And if I were to buy a new monitor today it would be 2560x1440.

These days, the hot topics regarding gaming monitors are FreeSync and G-Sync. G-Sync works with nVidia videocards exclusively. Free-Sync works with AMD videocards. So if you buy a 290X, you're gonna want a Free-Sync monitor.

These monitors are 120Hz. But with FreeSync, your game doesn't need to run at 120 fps. Then monitor will display new frames as they come along. Which makes the whole experience look a lot smoother. So smooth, that you don't need to run 60 fps (or 120 fps) constantly. The G-Sync monitors also have ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), but you'll need to run 120 fps for that. In any case, if you want a gaming monitor, you'll want FreeSync/G-Sync.

Not sure when the first FreeSync monitor will be available. Samsung and LG have announced a few last month (early January). Hopefully they'll be for sale soon. Check out the LG 29UM67 and LG 34UM67 and the Benq XL2730Z.

I would look into a FreeSync monitor which should be getting released any time now. You would get the best experience with that.

Agreed, wait for freesync screens, especially if you have that 290X already.
