Why would hardware mean 704 instead of 740?

Hardware does not mean 704 or any other resolution. Someone asked what was wrong with the Leadtek capture card, and the answer is that the Leadtek card only has software encoding, where this card has hardware mpeg2 encoding.

Has anyone found an English version of the user's manual anywhere? The one I downloaded from their site, that was supposed to be in English, is not.

I'd like to read up a bit on this before I receive it.

704 would be just like 720, minus all the unescessary information on the bottom of the picture, IE macrovision spikes, teletext, CC, and other unessential information... I believe

Buyers beware....

This board has cirrus logic encoder chip. (Formaly known as Streammachine sm2280??). Some people on the net say that this has audio video sync problems.

Another option for those looking for a hardware MPEG2 encoder with tv-tuner is the AverMedia M179. It's currently for sale for $56 shipped on Ebay. There are 500 available at this price, with only ~50 bid on with 17 hours to go (though I'm sure the remaining cards will be put back up under another auction). If you want to look through the MythTV email list archives, you find information about this auction. The cards are shipped directly from AverMedia.

As for the card itself, the hardware encoder should be fairly good as it is the same used on the Hauppauge PVR250.

Just an FYI - according to the manufacturer website, card only accepts Windows XP. I havent found anything on whether it works with SnapStream or not.

my concern with these cards after reading many reviews is the issue of audio syncing. After many minutes, the audio can get behind on a lot of the cheaper capture cards. This is the primary reason I bought the Canopus ADVC100 (~$250) and it works just fine.

except that costs $250

well i'm thinking, is there a software codec for mpeg2? i can't imagine it'd take more than real-time divx compression that i'm doing now for vid-cap.
