I routinely see people bring buckets of water/soap into the laundry room. Does anyone know if you pour water into coin operated laundry, does it automatically trigger it to come on and start washing? Why else would this be happening? Discuss.

Are you sure they're bring buckets of water and not just a bucket to more easily hold their laundry supplies?

I can easily see there is liquid in the buckets, and in one instance I saw an old lady fill up the bucket using an outside water hose and then bring it in.

I don't know the answer to the OP's question so here's a laundromat story...

The scene: A laundromat with a trash can.
The players: A small boy, maybe three years old; his mother, maybe eighteen.

Boy: I gotta go peepee.
Mother: I'm busy.
Boy: I gotta go peepee now.
Mother: Come here.
Mother takes the child over to the trash can, pulls his pants down, holds him above the trash can so he can pee into it, which he does.

Yes, this laundromat had a functioning, well labeled, unoccupied bathroom less than twenty feet from the trash can. And yes, this did occur in Spidey's home state.

Does the laundromat have utility sinks or something like that in which people could hand-wash their clothing? If so, maybe people brought the buckets to fill the sinks with.

Good thought, but no sinks in there. Just washers and dryers.

there is water level sensor, so if there is enough water in the tank, it will start the wash cycle. Provided you triggered the cycle via coinage first.

I certainly wouldn't think the washers would start by themselves just by adding water.

Most likely, the buckets contain things they've been soaking before washing. Perhaps things with stains...

Hmm, I have also heard about people using zip ties to trick washing machines into thinking you have quarters in there. (slot push in only I guess)

Maybe you need the zip ties and the water to trigger wash cycle.

Maybe I don't have faith in humanity, but I can only guess there is some laundry theft going on here so I am trying to figure out how they are doing it.

some people like to premix the bleach into the water.

This, my wife also did this with certain detergents when we visited laundromats. Apparently dumping certain detergents directly onto the clothing is bad, especially those high concentrate ones.
