Hi,

Im wondering if i will be able to play crysis and UT3 with my computer:

amd xp 2600+ @ 2.15ghz
1gb ram
9800pro 128mb

Im planning on upgrading to a 7600gt or a x1950pro agp vid card. If i upgrade my vid card will i be ablt to play those games properly? or do i need a new build?

I would highly recommend getting at least an 8800gts 320, Those games have insane visuals. Ive read some performance article about crysis, they were running a quad core and single 8800gtx adn the gameplay was pretty smooth, but still stuttered.

I can tell you pretty much for sure that your 9800 Pro is not going to be enough for either game. You could replace it with a newer AGP card, but your processor is still going to be a problem. Both Crysis and UT3 are going to require more CPU power than most games, and an old Athlon XP is not going to be enough. Your 1GB of RAM will also be a limitation, at least in Crysis. I think you're going to want to go for a new build.

You can put something good together for very cheap these days. An AMD X2 4000+ Brisbane, decent AM2 motherboard, 2GB of RAM, and an X1950XT would be a very cheap but very powerful setup.

I agree with Extelleron, your system is probably borderline of the minimum specs, and probably below it. x1950pro agp might help a fair but, but like Extelleron said, you're also gonna run into trouble because of the cpu and the 1gb of ram.

A amd x2 4000+, biostar tforce mobo, 2gb of ddr 667, and a x1950xt 256mb will probably run ut3 and crysis on medium-ish, low aa/fsaa settings, depending on resolution. And those components can be had for roughly 350$.

I would wait to the last possible second,ie the week before crysis comes out and see exactly what AT and the rest of the communty say about the beta and what type a system will get by. By then a quad will cost alot less and possibly with the next refresh of the NViDiA line we could see a big drop on what the 320 cards sell for.

I'd say new build.

You might be able to get those games running at low settings, but you'll be spending a ton to upgrade (DDR/AGP) on a system with a CPU that's not gonna cut it.

Simply put, you'll need a new system.

I bet one if not both of those games will require SSE2 and won't even run on an Athlon XP.

X1950XT 256MB will do fine. Mark Rein was saying you will be able to run a UT3 just fine on 7900GT @ 60FPS on a 1024x1028. All UT games up till now run extremely good on high end hardware. Also you don't need DX10 epic said to get full blown graphic.. Opengl 1.5 will do just fine.

It's the all the new rage these days. It's sort of like a combination between 1024x768 and 1280x1024, but not really.

if you upgrade to at least an athlon64, 2GB of ram, and a 7900 series card, you should be fine at 1024x768, possibly higher with less detail.

or you could go core 2 duo, 8800GTS 320MB for even better performance.

A year ago I heard one of the developers that the minimum requirement for graphics will be a Pixel Shader 2 capable card.

As for the processors, it's a real shame that some new games don't support Athlon XP series because of the lack of SS2 instructions (Colin McRae comes to mind), even though the Athlon will fare better than a Celeron D, for example. I think it has to do with the software compilers used in development.
