I've always said, if there aren't enough people to fight, they ought to offer more money for the job. If taxpayers get hit too hard by the cost, they might not be so inclined to give the OK to more police actions. We spend a helluva lot now, for our military, and it's money well spent. If we can't protect our country, the economy will REALLY take a shlt. The slight discomfort we're experiencing now, will seem like a utopia by comparison. The extra cost for a mercenary priced army will seem like peanuts compared to an economy in ruins.

The fair thing to do is pay a fair wage for this service. Hike up the pay for the most dangerous jobs. There's got to be 101 ways to distribute money to entice people to fill these positions. Too damn bad if taxpayers have to feel a little pinch.

i dont see what the big deal is personally

just wondering... do you all realize that some countries require EVERY (at least male) citizen to serve in the military for either 2 or 4 years after they graduate high school...

Being wrong morally doesn't mean it's wrong legally or constitutionally. If they draft, you will go, Little Grasshopper.

I wont. I will repeatedly break my own leg.

I would support a mandatory 1-2years in the military for all people (male or female) before I would support any draft.

don't forget... drafted soldiers often perform far worse than "regular" soldiers. that's one of the (many) reasons that there were so many deaths in Vietnam.

it is also political suicide... granted, only old people vote, but if a politician supports drafting their sons and grandsons, they'll turn against the politician.

It implies, that the government owns you, not the other way around, which is IMO, immoral.

it is good when a nation really needs to defend itself. it spreads the burden of any action of the nation across all classes, all races, atleast in theory. but its been tainted over and over by the fact that the rich and powerful can protect their children. just look at my sig.

it was even more blatant during the civil war, where the rich could simply pay a fee to have their children excluded. this led to riots in ny.
