Q3 vs. Prophet Pro question

Anyone have any idea why the longer I play Q3, the smoother it gets?
I have a TBird 1GHz/128 RAM/Prophet Pro 64MB system, nothing overclocked, no hardware conflicts.
Other games work great (Elite Force/FAKK2/Kingpin) but Q3 starts out choppy as hell, then smooths out.

All the textures settling into the video memory. I have no idea.

That's what I was thinking also, it seems to run faster once I've been through the screen.
But I don't have this issue on Q3 engine games, and I haven't had it until now. I just changed to VIA chipset/Athlon from trusty P3 600.
If it were AGP issues, I'd think other games would suffer.

I've had the problem with my GeForce2 MX. It is basically the textures and everything loading into the memory. Also if you don't have texture compression on it is very slow, expecially in huge levels and open spaces.

I also believe it is textures loading into video memory.

Also, IMO with a 64mb card you should not need to run with texture compression on. At least I don't.
