Q3A network/multiplayer question...

Ok... Hmm.

Well, I spent the last two days getting 3 computers connected on a LAN
and sharing a cable modem internet connection. When trying to play
Quake Arena (my kid's a lot better than I am) I was hoping that 2 or even
all 3 of us could all join a multiplayer server and thus all play together.
If we try, only one of us seems to be able to join a server at a time. The
others just countdown and timeout. Is it possible for us to all play Internet
play on the same server, while we share a connection? We can play each
other, locally... but we'd like to play on the Internet with their Uncle, who
is out of town. (I also wanted to watch in Spectator mode, it's a blast watching
my kid).

The LAN is a cable modem hooked into a Linksys Etherfast Cable Router and
then from there, we're all jacked into the Router. Anyone else done this, or know
of a workaround??

(BTW, I love this forum, soooo glad I found it!)

You can't do this because your LAN shares a single IP address (via the router). Quake (and most other games) will not allow multiple connections from a single IP. Yes, you can play locally because all three computers have different addresses on the LAN. The work around for this is to drop the router and lease additional IP addresses. Check with your ISP, around here, Time Warner charges $10 a month for each additional IP address.

UT does allow for multiple connections from one IP addy, but Q3 does not...

just throw in some bots and play amongst yourselves!

Q3 should work if you set the variable net_port or net_qport, not sure which, to a different value on each machine.

Do you have a static or dynamic IP address? You would need to set the IP of the router to the one given to your main PC. Once that is done, set the router as a gateway, disable DHCP and assign IP addresses to each of the machines (192.168.x.x works well). Now then, the LAN Ip of the router should be something like 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. So, if yours looks like this, your other machines could be something like 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4 with the same subnet of 255.255.255.0. In this configuration, all of your machines should see each other and access the internet at the same time. You still won't be able to play Q3 over the internet from all 3 if one of them is your server. You will be able to connect to another internet game with all 3 though. If you want to host a game on the internet and play it with all of your machines, set one up as the server, foward the port through the router to that machines IP and then connect to that machine with the other 2 locally. If you need a clearer explanation, just let me know and I'll walk you through how mine is set up.
