My old Q6600 died. what cpu/mobo will have the same kind of useful gaming life as my old stock clocked Q6600, 2007 - 2011 R.I.P. ? My current Vid card is 6850, pushing a 28'' 1900x1200 and a 24" 1900x1080.

My Q6600 ran 4 instances of Everquest 1 while running Skyrim some times it was a little choppy but good enough for me considering it was @ stock clocks with only 1 6850.

Any suggestions on a replacement that will have the same kind of gaming life span with future games in mind?

yes I multitask a ton & no I wont ever overclock it.

It died running at stock clocks? You mean the mobo died? Are you selling the q6600 on ebay "for parts/not working"? Honestly I would try it in a new S775 mobo before doing anything else. You can get a decent 775 board for so cheap. I bought a nice gigabyte P45 chipset mobo off ebay for $30, all it had was one busted off sata port. Fair compromise for me.

So its a triple core? How did you verify the motherboard is not the cause of the broken core 0?

Agree with SM - most likely the mobo unless you decided to pop out the Q6600 to look at and rubbed it up and down on the family cat...

If you're pretty certain you cannot salvage the chip/mobo and want to upgrade, I would suggest an i7 2600k on a Z68 chipset motherboard. Add 8-16GB of DDR3 and you're done for several years.

Pop it in another 775 board and test it before you do anything. I've been doing this a long time and I think I recall seeing a bad CPU twice out of all the machines I worked on.

If you were satified with your old q6600, just go buy another used one for about 100$. It seems the rest of your system is fine.

If you want to upgrade, just grab a z68 mobo, ddr3 memory, and 2500k.
Should be good for you for about 5 years.

I will not go the used route on cpu's & I figure its time to upgrade. The question is to what. Hopefully something that will make it through the next 4 years of upcoming MMO's / FPS's / RPG's with only GPU upgrades like the Q6600 @ stock colcks did.

according to a quick google search. "CPU 0 is critical to Windows and cannot be disabled." nor can I disable it in the bios, Its going in the trash.

Given your circumstances, I agree with Happy Medium's suggestion of Z68+2500K+DDR3 memory. My P45 motherboard is a little flaky so I'm tempted to do the same. I was going to wait for Ivy Bridge, but it doesn't look compelling enough to wait.

2500k will spank the Q6600 left and right silly and give you the same amount of threads as the Q6600.

The 2600K will spank the Q6600 silly left right, up down, to the side and back, and give you twice as many threads as the Q6600.

uhhhh did they just impliment this? Because this is pure BS.
Ive seen many pro overclockers at competitions disable ALL CORES except 1 though 0-5 on a hexicore to get the best possible single core score.

2500k

ASRock P67 Extreme6 (only 165 on newegg, 18 digi power phases)

4 gb DDR3 2133 (2x2)

Should only cost 400 and with that motherboard you can reuse your old 775 cooler.

From what I read the asrock extreme6 is able to keep voltage lower than any other board, which is most important thing when overclock sandy bridge, keeping the voltage low.

If voltage wasnt an issue, most chips would max out around 5.1-5.2, but because of high voltage, people most poeple only run 4.5-4.7 24/7. Thats why its important to get motherboard with best power delivery system.

Plus you can reuse old z68 and p67 motherboards on the new upcoming 22nm quad cores, meaning the latest cpu technology will still be available for your motherboard for at least another year.

At any rate, you shouldnt trash the chip. Just state clearly that it has a defective core and may be on its way to cpu-heaven. I'd buy it for $20.

How did the Q6600 die?

I'm curious about that too. The two times I've seen defective CPUs in other machines it was due to 1. improper heatsink installation on an old Athlon XP, it burned up. 2. From overclocking and upping the volts too much on a quad.

Seriously, 2500K, though...you'll be glad your Q6600 croaked. Sandy Bridge is just all kinds of win.
