Q6600 heat sink?

Hi,

Working on my new system. Last things to buy will be the Q6600 and the P5B deluxe. I want a 3rd party air heatsink so I can do some moderate overclocking.. thinking of getting to around 2.8 GHz. 3 would be nice but not counting on it.

In any case, what kind of heatsinks can handle the output of a Q6600? Hopefully something that balances noise and cooling a little bit, but I don't expect it to be whisper quiet (will have a GF 8600 and 6 hard drives, so plenty of noise from them).

Umm... the most recent review at anandtech.com will give you a good idea

If you are not in a rush:
Although not out yet, this is "expected" to be the best air cooling you can buy with money.

P.S. If you are buying a $600+US quad core and plan to OC, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the best cooling there is.

Ha, that's the same setup I'm planning to buy in the near future. Wonder if you'll beat me to it, Tunaboo. I think the Thermalright ultra-120 would be a good choice since the 120 extreme and ifx14 aren't currently "launched" products anywhere I looked. Let me know what you end up doing.

Well parts getting ordered in next month so can't wait too long.

Wonder if the thermalright ultra-120 fits on a P5B. Looks like it should... Never bought a heatsink that didn't have a clear fan mount.. what size of fan is meant to go with it? 120mm or something bigger?

YAY~ Quadcores.....

i love how these guys are so underesimated.

Anyhow, just to let you know, the TDP on these monsters can climb 200W+

A moderately overclocked Quadcore will put out around 230W which will bring a medium/high waterkit to idle temps of around 40, and load temps of near 70.

i believe stock is around 130W TDP.

Something you should be thinking about.

Well I am not doing water on this rig.. Ultra 120 is pretty freaking big, it can't deal with a TDP of 230 watts? I have a nice 120mm fan waiting for it.. also have a 2nd fan that will be blowing outside air right into it. Like I said, not going for 3.8 GHz.. if I get 2.8 or 3 GHz I will be plenty happy, I need the multi-core aspect more than I need insane clock speed.

that all has to do with voltage.

If your voltage is low, and you can keep that 3ghz, from a Q6600, then sure.

But if you have a C2D right now, you'll totally understand when i say, its a different world from 1.3V -> 1.4V

Might wanna wait for the Ultra-120 Extreme or IPX-14 to get released. The extreme has 2 additional heat pipes (total of 6) and the yet untested IPX-14 has 8 heat pipes. I think you want the max cooling you can get w/ an o/c'ed quad core. I'm actually delaying my purchase until the IPX-14 gets reviewed. I'll point you to the review of the U-120 Extreme where it was found that this HS offered 6 degrees C cooler load temp than the standard U-120. That could be the difference between 70C and 66C.
