for those of you who THOUGHT you missed out on the $199.99 special price (instore only), it's still going on.

the idea was to get rid of them. but we just recieved another skid of them today (80 boxes of 5 processors).

we also recieved instructions that the sales is going on until intel stops shipping the chips.

if you look closely.. that is a motherboard/processor bundle that you linked. Plus, the $199 is for the processor only and in-store only...and it's been going on since february... they keep extending it.

I wish they would ship it for $199, nearest Microcenter for me is like 5 hours away.

QFT. I'd get one, but it's not worth a 13 hour drive, or begging someone in the area to go get one for me then have to ship it, get reimbursed, and so on.

I can see having single weekend "in store only" special sales but if you're going to
have something going on perpetual clearance for like 1.5 MONTHS you'd think they could at least do web orders as well as retail store sales.

there's a very good reason they're not selling them online at that price.

how much do they loose per chip? about $90. get people in store and attach other products to them and try to use the margin on those items to offset the loss.

it's all about smart business.

as far as the e8400's... that's in intel's court.

That's exactly what they are doing. At the store in Tustin, CA they are requiring a $25 minimum purchase with the processor. I ended up paying more online, but I didn't like the fact that particular stores were requiring a purchase in addition to the promotion they are running without letting people know on the website.

You sure about that?

There seems to be a LOT of misinformation floating around about this deal. Lots of people are bitter that you can only buy them in-store, and I suspect that's where a lot of the vitriol comes from. People have been saying: 1. They're OEM, not retail, and MC posted "retractions" to their ad in "all" stores. 2. All stores sold out within the first 24 hours of the sale (which was, what, a month ago?) and only a handful of people per store got any. 3. Extra purchase beyond processor required.

I just picked one up on Sunday night for $199. Didn't have to buy anything else.

Did you personally go to the store and try to buy one only to be turned away for not making an additional purchase, or is this just something you heard?

Not true!
I got one in Tustin with 650i EVGA motherboard and then returned motherboard for the full price without a problem as I found out that EVGA is not giong to support 45nm quad core in 6xx nForce. No one told me that I HAVE TO buy anything else.

BTW, it is a sweet process. So far I'm running it at 3.0 GHz... need more time for serious overclocking.

I personally spoke on the phone to an associate at the Tustin store.

Here's the situation. I'm 70 miles away from Microcenter so it didn't make much sense to take a special trip to Tustin to get the processor with the way gas prices are, as well as I just went through surgery so sitting in a car for that long didn't sound appealing. My sister happened to be going to San Diego two weekends ago and would be passing by Microcenter on the way home so I gae her the money to pick it up. 2 days before she was to pick it up I called Microcenter to find out if they still had stock, they did. The morning of I called again to verify they had stock and to ask them to put one aside so my sister could pick it up easily and be in and out of the store. The first person on the line said it was in stock, and then they transferred me to peripherals. The sales associate on the phone verified it was in stock, that they had over 80 of them left and then mentioned that it required another purchase to get the promo pricing. I asked him again to clarify what the special was and he again said, $199 with an additional purchase of $25 or more. I said it was my understanding that it was $199 + tax out the door, and that no other purchase was required. He again said it required an additional purchase. I asked which stores had this required purchase promo and he said Santa Clara, Tustin and Marietta. I then thanked him for the clarification and hung up. I could have probably asked for a manager and complained, but I was already upset that they were not making good on the promo and felt like it was a bait and switch. Since I was not going to be at the store it was going to be difficult to determine what I could purchase for $25 and frankly I didn't feel like they should get my money at that point. I also did not want to ask my sister to go in and argue with them for me.

It could be that it's the stores policy to try and sell you on something else and since you were already buying something they didn't attempt to do the hard sell. OR perhaps they were telling everyone on the phone it required another purchase hoping they would buy something additional when they got to the store. I really don't know the motive behind what the sales associate told me, all I know is it really turned me off to that store and instead of them making good on their promo (even if it was at a loss) they lost a customer.

Unless they've stated clearly in their advertising material that the promotional price requires some other purchases, then what you're describing would be flat out illegal. I seriously doubt that this is being done by Microcenter. It's probably just a overzealous salesman trying to rack up more commission.

That sucks. I got mine in the Santa Clara store without having to buy anything else. Of course the guy asked me if I wanted a HSF or motherboard too, but told him I was already set. No problems otherwise. :/

there is no official rule on extra purchases. madison heights did have a contest for employees to see who could have the most attachments of nod32 with q6600's. unfortunately as a member of the "sales support" team I didn't count. but it did get us to sell smarter and attach correctly. hence the reason we all got the thanks of our GM when he got the thanks of his boss for having the highest attachment rate without pissed off customers.

and yes I inspected the entire shipment of processors... all slacr G0 chips.

and yes I bought one (so much for the e2160)

Confirmed deal is still going on not just for the Q6600 @ $199.99, but also the E4500 for $99.99 and the e2160 for $59.99. [no bundles required].

Went inside the local Rockville MD store, & searched their in-store inventory at one of the available internet terminals in the aisles All 3 of the above processors I listed are in stock.

Oh yeah, I absolutely love MC for their awesome CPU deals, (and occasional video card), but most of their stuff has a much higher price than you could find shopping around online.

OEM drives can be fairly priced, even the OEM software (OSes). But when it comes to just about all the hardware - motherboard, soundcards, cooling, cases, PSUs...its all priced relatively high. The only way its ever a good deal is via sales and rebates, even then whatever it is can generally be found for cheaper online, so you're paying for convenience (if there's a B&M near you that is)

Even for someone like me who knows better, its pretty hard to walk into a store full of such 'goodies' and only walk out with just the CPU, but I manage .
