Your friend told you backward. The Q9300 is slightly faster than the Q6600, when neither are overclocked, but the Q6600 overclocks much better. And which you buy is up to you. You didn't give many details, so neither can we.

the 9300 will be a little bit faster and cooler, but i'd get the cheaper of the two if you're never going to overclock.

if you are going to overclock, get the Q6600

the Q9300 on DDR2 would be good but i hear the 9400's are around the near corner, suppose to have a multiplier of 8 and probably 6mb L2 cache also otherwise it'd be a 9450 if it had 12mb L2 cache

I like my Q9300 on DDR3. Got it up to 3Ghz and stable 3hrs so far on Prime. Did 200+% on memtest (not 86) Now I have both my rigs at 3Ghz. 70c on quad all cores using core temp .99 - kinda high seeing the ambients are 78 and ususally gets up to 90*f in this room sometimes

& UT3 runs smoother on it than my 8400 once i have 2 3870s, one for each, it'll be more fair

but if you want the 6600, its just as good

As others have clarified, the Q9300 is superior to the Q6600 at stock speeds: the clockspeed is a teeny bit faster, the cpu architecture more advanced (Penryn 45nm), greater power efficiency. On the other hand it typically costs about 40 per cent more.

There are many Q6600 overclockers out there. It will probably be remembered as one of the great overclocking chips of the x86 era. If you're going to spend the money on qualite enthusiast kit, why not get a good heatsink and overclock the Q6600 to 3+ GHz? It's simpler on the Q6600 for a variety of reasons (higher multiplier, lower default FSB, more mature production).

Also, you probably won't require 750 W from your power supply. What you've described so far will run fine on 500 (even less if you aren't overclocking). A qualite manufacturer is more important than the theoretical wattage total.
