I would believe "Aigomorla" is correct as he know much more than others due to his experience. As for air above 1.4v well it does depend on what you have for cooling? Can you cool the amount of heat it generates fast enough? Some cases, "yes" up to a point (above 1.4 IMO) case airflow, HS, Fans. The question is, do you really want to achieve higher speeds with higher temps above 1.4v? Some say yes, some say no as I see in specs around this forum. The thing is, How long will you own the chip you have at the moment and what will you do to preserve it as long as you can at the higher voltage you have it set at? Me personally, I agree with Aigomoria. But, I just want to see what a certain chip will do on air.

BTW, I know water removes heat better and much faster than air but isnt it fun to know what the limit really is? Limit to water as to air. Air will always remove heat as water has a limit! Still; water = cooler as air helps cool water.

Ok . here's all my results.

The first voltages are BIOS voltages, idle/load are from HW monitor. I have used the lower of the voltages shown by HW monitor and the higher of the core temperatures shown by coretemp.

I also opened up 3 5.25' drive bays and it does reduce load temperatures by 4-5 celcius, so I am definately going to get that Scythe Bay fan. Removing the side panel reduces it by another 2 degrees, but I think I will skip that expense for now. However, the temperatures in the picture are taken with the closed case and without removing the drive bays. So you may reduce the load temperatures by 4 degrees in each case.

Ambient temperatures are 21 Celcius.

EDIT: Btw .. how are these temperatures in comparison to coolers others have? Similar temperatures or are mine way out of line with respect to the different overclocks? I guess for similar comparisons .. this would apply to those who have Q6600s with VIDs of around 1.29-1.31?

Ya .. once I get the front bay fan, that's goin down to 61!

I need a new 120mm fan either ways coz I only have two in my case, one in the front and one at the back. The front one pulls air over the HDDs .. so that's totally useless with the cooling.

I also put in my old chipset fan next to the pwm to exhaust air through the backplate, so thats helping with the hot pwm.

which is no-compromise, still mildly indulgent, and $350 if one buys most items at SideWinder.

At one point do you stop yourself and say "I think the money may be better spent on a Q9450..."

Well, some of us really like to build things. My cooking got a whole lot better when I stopped fearing complexity. Adding water cooling looks like fun.

The argument goes that a decent water cooling rig can be cannibalized for future builds, the water block might not fit, but the radiator won't wear out, the pump will last longer than one's interest in a chip, yada yada.

What's limiting my overclocks? At the moment, heat. This would fix that, on any chip.

Hey, I'm still on 1600 x 1200 monitors, even though I'd like 1920 x 1200 monitors. The last 320 pixel of width didn't seem worth the extra $300 at the time. You're saying the same thing about the added value of water cooling, and reasonable people choose both ways.

(To overclock a Q9450 further than a Q6600 goes might require "other changes" besides just the cpu, because of the lower multiplier. Not all boards are happy at a high FSB.)

Hmmm don't know if this helps but I have achieved 3.6GHz and it is current Prime95 stable for around 5 hours. I left most of the settings as AUTO and just changed the CPU volt (and CPU + FSB speeds of course)

Check my sig for my settings
