I wanted to get one of these systems, so badly... but alas, Dell will not let you use your Preferred Customer's care on anything from the Business section.

So I ended up getting an XPS 410 from their Outlet, for $392.00 shipped, with a C2D E4300... which I will overclock as soon as my 8800GTS video Card and my extra ram gets here.

Eventually I will buy a Quad Core CPU...

this is a good everyday price, but with other hot deals you could build this for less.

i have 2 gb ddr2 i got for $40.00 total
160gig hard drive for $20.00
Q6600 $280.00
case and PSU, 500watt ultra and case for free after rebates
there is a nice motherboard on slickdeals right now for $78.00
8300gs is almost worth $50.00 max
dvd+-rw $30.00 easy
vista basic $90.00
keyboard and mouse $20.00

thats $610.00 total

for what would be a better system and you could not buy the 8300GS and put that $50.00

towards a much more viable card like a $100.00 8600GT or better card, or some other hot

deal.

if you don't want to build your own, and this would be OK deal.

I agree on the vid card statement, but you failed to include shipping in your calculations, the amount you can save building the same system is negilible if actually anything after shipping charges. Not to mention someone will say your time is worth something and hunting down deals, doing rebates and building the machine all take more time than ordering a prebuilt.

I agree with the others that feel this is more than an ok deal, now that you did the math it seems even better... $.02

UPDATE!!!!

the standard 9200 is now $40 MORE, but it now has a "No Monitor" option. bringing the Q6600 setup to $659 total, instead of the $619

i think im gonna go ahead and get one now . . . . .

all the prices i quoted include tax and shipping, and money for stamps and envelopes.

not to mention the dell has a 1 year warranty, while most of these parts have 3year or lifetime warranty, with the the cd-rom about the only thing with a 1 year warranty.

not to mention much better overclocking, and a much better system overall, and with the $150.00 you save, and the $50.00 from the 8300gs, you would be close to getting a 8800gts 320mb, with a lifetime warranty too.

I got mine for $619 minus another $9 through fatwallet cash back. I am very happy with it. It came with Vista but I installed XP Pro on it after disabling the raid option in the bios.
I put two additional 500gb sata drives in it and I plan on upgrading the video card. It takes like 3 mins to encode a dvd now where it took like 30 mins on my athlon 3200. Very sweet.

this is a great deal i unfortunately bought at 659 and now down to 609 with dvd writer and 2gb of ram. i did have trouble so far trying to boot up the xp pro install disk (blue screen of death encountered). i thought i'd just put that on instead of vista home. i imagine it has to do with the board drivers on such a new chipset?

got this off of techbargains but two thumbs up on this deal

You need to disable the raid setting in the bios. I was having the same problem.

Also I would suggest calling Dell, they are usually pretty good about crediting you on price changes if you threaten to return.

And yes XP Pro is compatible with 4 cores. The challenge comes with finding software that really uses it.

Go into the BIOS and change, I think, RAID setup to AUTO. Save, and exit BIOS. Then go back into BIOS, and under boot devices, turn off the SATA hard drive. That forces the system to boot from CD.

thx for prompting me to approach dell as they offered me a $100 coupon to make things right and that is better than $50 credit in my case. i will try the raid config and reinstall of xp pro

For those of you who've added HDD's to this system:

How would I go about adding a couple SATA II HDD's? I know I need SATA II cables with a 90 degree bend (are there right/left handed bends?) How long do the SATA cables need to be-I've heard anywhere from 18-36"" but I am not sure- I am not home until this weekend and I'd like to order form newegg so that I can take care of this during the weekend.

Do I need any power cables?

What brand of HDD does dell use? My came with an 80GB SATA II HDD which is only made by Seagate and WD as far as I know(that's all the info I found on newegg).

The only brands of HD's I have seen in Dell systems have been WD and Seagate, and on the rare occasion 80GB Hitachi.

its not really dead - you just dont get the goodies - which was a combo drive and an extra gig of ddr2. Not really deal breakers for me. I'm still trying to figure out if i want this or the acer.

Well considering it's $100 more on top of that I'd say fuhgedaboudit.
