In addition to what I posted before, I never answered the question.

Haswell or ivy bridge?

I say if you are buying new get a haswell and a z87 mb.

But if you don't have the budget find someone upgrading from sandy bridge and get a good deal on a still blazing system with big OC potential. 6 series chipset also has native sata 3.

I was faced with the same question.

I Had a Q6600 oc'd to 3.2 for 5 years. I waited for haswell. Then I decided to buy a second hand mb, ram, i5 2500k sandy bridge. $275. All I had to pick up was a case and cooler. Corsair R200 and a CM hyper 212 EVO. $100. Everything else I had. So a high power gaming pc for $375. Not bad.

I got the parts for 1/2 the price of new and have a very similar performance. I might suggest you do the same.

I'm currently just figuring out where my OC will end up. 4.3ghz was effortless. 4.5-4.7 should be attainable.

I don't think the q6600 to q9550 or q9560 is worth it. Just OC your q6600 you'll get the same performance. All it takes is a $35 cooler like the AC freezer 7 pro.

The benefits you get from a p67,z68, z77, z87 mb are great. My q6600 oc'd was not bad speed. But the newer boards boot faster, and have better drive controllers. My ssd speeds doubled and my boot time is super fast I think I get to the desktop in about 15 seconds.

I did something similar - picking up a really cheap 1090t when I just couldn't take the really long boot times (it took about 20 seconds for the darn DFI board to post) and the flakey sleep behavior of the board housing my q6700 at an effortless 3 Ghz.

Just the benefits of the 970 board (click the mouse to wake up from sleep! USB3! lots of sata 3 ports!) made it a wash. I sold the q6700 and board for >$100 and the 1090t and board were $170. 50% more CPU for threaded tasks was just icing on the cake.

There are a lot options, OP, but the deal at NewEgg for a Haswell is hard (impossible?) to beat. It trumps Microcenter and getting a high end board and a really fast CPU for $425 is an outstanding value.

As for the Newegg deal. Do you know with certainty that the combo deals contain motherboards and processors that are factory sealed never sent back as bad over clockers and are factory fresh?

Haswell is now almost always the best choice for all but hardcore overclockers, for whom the situation is not fully sorted yet.

Some users who don't necessarily need a quad core might be better served waiting for i3 Haswells to hit in Q3 of this year, or choosing something else like an Ivy i3 or AMD A10 if waiting is not an option.

Upgrade to Haswell if you have the $$ but Ivybridge is good as well. I upgraded from a Q6600 over a month ago to an Ivybridge (jumped when I saw a i5-3570k for $152) and its been pretty good.

Wow! I didn't expect so many replies. It sounded like Haswell was the best option for me so I grabbed one of the newegg motherboard combos yesterday and will be building my new computer later this week. Thanks for the advice everyone!
