Hi, I just join and I hope to be a helpful addition to this forum

So I got me a 8800GTX and its a great card but I am bottlenecking the heck out of it so I was thinking of getting a q6600 since its 280$ on newegg which is a amazing deal since it was like 600$ no so long ago. So should I get that or wait for Penry? How long will it last since this will be my only upgrade and I want to last for 2-3 years?

Darn, paid $291.99 for it 3 weeks ago. Now $270.49.

What the chance of getting back $21.50 from ClubIT? :frown:

I am seriously eyeing this chip as well. What a powerhouse for the dollars. I won't put cores 2 and 3 to much use, but who cares .

What's a good LGA775 mobo to pair it with that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Can I run my current sticks of PC3200 RAM in the system until I have some more upgrade coin?

Thanks, I just got my fourth quad, and the best ! So how long does it take Clubit to ship ?

Edit:Sorry Markbnj, you need at least PC6400 DDR2 to get a good OC and get your moneys worth. As far as the mobo, a lot seem to like the Abit p35e (do I have that right?) for $70AR.

To answer your question, you can always wait for something better, but going from a 3700 to a Q6600 (OC'ed a little at least) is a big swing, so why wait ? and 2-3 year ? who knows, but how long ago was the 3700 ? 2-3 years ?

Just do it.

Thanks, Mark. I'll have to add some new RAM into my budget calculations.

That's a loaded question with no easy answer. 2 choices. # 1Work around or get used to your bottleneck in someway #2upgrade. Assuming you've done all you can or want to do for #1. The Q6600 is a good option 2.

If you're not happy with your current proc and have the money know, it's a good time to buy. The Q6600 is a really good deal right now. A search for Q6600 will turn up a lot of positive and active posts. As more apps start to work with multi-core the Quads will improve. Of course 18 months from now they're not going to be the 'in' chip. If you want a longer life span than look at higher end chips. But the Q6600 is the best bang for buck. So the extra money you could spend on a higher-end chip now would probably be better off in the bank for 18months.

From what I've gleamed from reading recent posts. If you need SLI than the EVGA NF68-A1(make sure it's A1). If you don't need SLI than the P35 chipset is a bit more stable, a better OC'er, takes less power, and generally cheaper. ABIT, ASUS, and Gigabyte are the big players for the P35.
I'm guessing you'd need new memory right now also. Now is also a good time to buy memory, the market is flooded with good DDR2 so prices are cheap.
Personally I'm looking at the Abit IP35-Pro because I'd like the RAID and 1394. The IP35-E is supposed to be a good board but is lower end.

Good info here.

From what I've gathered First Q of 2008 but I think those are only going to be the upper end chips. They're supposed to be really good, what little I've seen.

you can wait for penryn or you can get the q6600 to really open up that GTX you have, keep in mind that your 17" LCD is also really holding you back in games.

good luck and have fun, if you are always waiting for the next gen hardware, you are not going to have much time to enjoy the hardware that you have.
